The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 284

Brittany’s POV

Jason had been threatening to cure out for a while, but I didn’t think he’d actually do it. I always thought he’d come back around again, remembering how important I was to him, how much we had meant to one another at one point in our lives.

We were mates, yet he was treating me like a villam

Once he actually made the move to publically go forward with the divorce, it didn’t take me long to hear about it.

I knew my time was almost up, and I was running out of ways to hold onto what little power I had left.

Immediately, I went to the hospital to try to talk to the former Alpha. He was still partial to me, and as long as I held his ear, I still had some kind of chance in swaying Jason.

But I knew even before I went that this was a longshot option now. Jason had caught on to my plans and put a guard to watch his father’s door. I’d been able to escape that guard, barely, but I wasn’t fool enough to think that would work in my favor a second time.

As soon as I stepped into the hallway his room was located in, I knew that this wouldn’t work. There were two guards assigned to the front of the door, not even attempting to look inconspicuous now. And I recognized them too. They were very loyal to Jason, more than they had ever been to me.

With guards like those at the door, I wouldn’t be able to see the former Alpha anymore. This cut off my main way to retain influence in the pack. Hopefully, the whispers I’d spread would hold even without my continued reinforcement, but I didn’t trust they would. Especially with Jason’s meddling.

He was still Alpha, after all. People respected that, even if they sided with me.

I had to do something more drastic to sway things back to my favor.

And the only way I could really do that was with Laila and Ava finally out of the way.

As inconspicuously as I could, I turned around and left the hospital. When I was back in my car, I pulled out my phone.

Not all that long ago, Adelaide had promised that she would take care of Laila and her daughter. She’d failed so far, but maybe she still had some kind of plan. I was desperate enough to call her and find out, even though she was a bit frightening, even to, me. She might be a human, but I knew better than to mess with her.

What I was doing was poking a sleeping bear. I didn’t want her to turn her eye on me, but I needed an out, a way to move forward. I was backed into a corner now, and I was ready to take things to the next level.

I pushed call.

She answered on the second ring. You are lucky I didn’t delete this number. What do you want?

Are you still holding up your end of the bargain? What are you going to do about Laila and Ava?

She scoffed. Why would a werewolf need a human’s help?

She was being purposefully aggressive, but I was too. I could see through her hostility to the fear underneath, because I felt it too. He weren’t that different, she and I, though I said that begrudgingly, not liking to compare myself to a lowly human.

You are scared of something,I said.

Adelaide didn’t answer.

Fine. Be a coward. But I am getting rid of them with or without your help,I said. With would be easier.

I’m done being involved,Adelaide said.

+30 Bonus

Fine,I said again, ready to hang up.

But,Adelaide added at the last moment.

I stilled.

I could put you in contact with someone. A distant associate of mine. If you are looking to hire someone who may be open to moreunsavory tasks, she said. Would you be materested?

Yes,I said, without question.

“I will send you the information, she said. But I warn you now, leave my name out of this. She hung up.

A moment later, a number came as a text. There was no other information.

Wasting no time, I called it.

What’s the job?asked a gruff voice on the other line.

I knew just what to say. I want to have someone killed.

Laila’s POV

I was at home making dinner when I saw the headlines. Alpha Jason to Divorce Luna Brittany Without Council Support. I nearly burned my hand on the stovetop.

Hannah looked up in alarm from where she was doing her homework on the kitchen island. Ava, thankfully, was playing up in her room.

What happened? You okay?

Lthink so?I turned the stovetop to a simmer, then brought my phone over to Hannah to show her the screen.

Huh,Hannah said. Guess he’s actually going through with it.

Seems like,I said, though I still wasn’t sure. Was the reason it had taken him so long to get a divorce because the elder council hadn’t agreed? But Jason was pushing forward anyway, now.

That shouldn’t change anything for me. Nothing was really that different. And yet

My heart leaped in my chest, hope springing anew. Immediately, I tried to push down on it. I couldn’t fall victim to this again.

At that same moment, my phone buzzed with a text, and I nearly jumped out of my skin, I had been so caught up in my thoughts.

Checking, it was from Jason.

Did you see the news?

A moment later, a second message came in.

I’m hoping we can talk.

What is it?Hannah asked.

Again, I didn’t know what to say, so I showed her the messages.

That’s it,she said, standing. We have to get Carter in on this.

What? No

Come on, Laila. Operation Fake Dating to Get Jason to Back Off is a go.

That’s a long name for the operation.
