The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 286

Laila’s POV

As the wolf leaped closer, Jason hand shot out and, catching the wolf by the throat, he abruptly turned and slammed him down on the ground, knocking the wind out of the attacker. In what must have been shock, the attacker transformed back to his human state, struggling for breath.

Stay back,Carter told me, then pushed his way past me. I’ll protect you,he said, right as he stumbled over the leg of my overturned chair. He fumbled forward, straight into the space between Jason and the attacker. Jason had to step backwards, and in the chaos, the attacker slunk away, pushing through the group of onlookers.

Jason moved like he wanted to chase him, but do to so would mean stepping on or over Carter. Grumbling, Jason leaned down and helped Carter up to his feet.

What was that?he asked.

Sorry,Carter said, his face beet red. I’ve never been in a fight before. I’d never seen a knife like that. He tried to stab Laila, I

He started to stand but then wobbled. I think I need to sit down.

Jason all but threw him in a chair, then turned around to seek me out. Fury sparked in his gaze, until his eyes caught mine and relief took over. He walked around the table toward me, then dropped his gaze to look me over.

Are you hurt? Did he harm you?

I’m okay,I said. I moved in time.

I should have been faster. I almost failed you. Again. His frown was heavy.

Reaching out, I touched his arm, very gently, just to prove that I’m alive. He looked at the space I was touching him, and then up to my face.

How did you get here so fast?I asked him.

I feltyou,he said, then pressed his lips together like he thought better of it. My heart raced in my chest, but he didn’t say more, instead turning back to Carter, who was starting to turn green where he sat on one of the chairs.

Several of the other guests had stood, most creating distance from the chaos. But a few lingered. One even started fanning Carter with a menu, clearly worried he might pass out.

I was worried about that too. Carter was a nice guy, but naïve. I hated that he had to learn about fighting and near death experiences from hanging out with me.

But this was all the more reason this fake dating idea was a bad one. He should be out with nice college girls, not with someone who had nearly died too many times, and had more enemies than I wanted to admit.

Jason, however, had no such sympathies for Carter. He loomed over him, glaring down in disappointment and anger.

You showed nothing but weakness here today,Jason said. You want to be Laila’s mate, but you act like a child. You utterly failed in protecting her. If she wasn’t so capable, she could be dead right now. Or back in the hospital.

Carter seemed to shrink into myself. I’m sorry,he said to no one in particular, because his eyes were on the floor. It could have been to me. To Jason. Or even to himself.

Jason turned to look at me. I’m taking you home.

The police will want a report, the host said, stumbling towards us.

Give them my number,Jason said. I’ll answer their questions.

Yes, Alpha,the host said.
