Chapter 287
“I should have shifted,” Tie said. “I should have torn out that guy’s throat.”
“You handled it,” I said. “I’m safe because of you.”
“He got away,” Jason said. Looking at me, he added, “You have to let me put guards on your house, to protect you. I’d give you an entire security detail.”
“Jason…”
“Laila, this was just proof of the danger that’s after you. I don’t know if this was Adelaide or Brittany, but that it could have been either of them should tell you all you need to know. You need to be protected. Please. For my benefit. For Ava. If not for your own.”
I wanted to argue. I still wasn’t comfortable with the idea of having guards around me all the time. But if tonight proved anything, it was that I was in more danger than I’d considered before. And I didn’t want any of this harm to fall on Ava.
“Alright,” I said.
He closed his eyes. When he opened them again, the red flashing was gone. “Thank you.” He still held my hand, and neither of us moved to stop that.
“You think Brittany could have done this?” I asked him. “I did see the article. She could have been enraged.”
“It’s possible,” Jason said. “I knew she was whispering lies in my father’s ear. She’s deceived him so much he can’t see the truth anymore. I’ve put a stop to that. Maybe this is her response.”
I looked out the window, trying to wade through my tumultuous feelings as the car drove through the streets to my neighborhood. My fear was still lingering, alongside some shock at how close I had been to being hurt again.
I was weirdly happy that Jason had saved me, and I liked holding his hand. Those were dangerous feelings and I couldn’t trust
them.
I couldn’t trust anything.
“When we arrive at your house, can I see Ava?” Jason asked.
And that was the question that finally pushed me over the edge. I pulled my hand from his and put some space between us.
“Jason, thank you for saving me. But I… I think it’s better if we go our separate ways from now on.”
“What?” Jason’s gaze snapped to me. “How can you say that?”
“Isn’t it obvious? We are disastrous for each other. These things only happen because we are trying to fumble forward with something that we shouldn’t. We should take the hints of the universe and stop trying to connect.”
It wasn’t just this, or Brittany acting against us. Or his father. Or the pack. Even the Moon Goddess seemed to agree we just weren’t compatible. Why else would she put Carter on my path?
“I will not be scared away from you because of Brittany,” he said. “And I will not let her hurt you either. We will not live our lives in fear because of her.”
“Jason…” I sighed.
“No, Laila. I know I haven’t done right by you in too many ways. I know I have a very far way to go in earning your trust. But I
will earn it. If it takes me the rest of my life, I will earn your forgiveness. And when I have it, I will pursue you romantically once again. I’ll do it right this time. We’ll go slow. I’ll declare my feelings publically. I’ll take you on dates.”
“That’s not…” My arguments were weak. My heart was soaring.
