Jason’s POV
I met Marcus back at the restaurant. He was waiting out front for me, standing beside the chief investigator, who I had met before, a grizzled werewolf named Winston.
“Thank you for returning, Alpha,” Winston said. “We have a few questions for you, hoping you can fill in some blanks.”
“I don’t know very much,” I admitted. “But I intend to help to the fullest capacity I am able.”
Winston gave me a hard look, but then nodded. “Understood, Alpha.
“No one in the restaurant seemed to recognize the attacker,” Marcus said. “He likely isn’t pack.”
“I want to see the footage,” I said. “Maybe a closer look will reveal something.”
“We already have the tape queued up in the manager’s office,” Winston said. “Come with me.”
We walked into the restaurant, and straight past the host station into the kitchen. As we went through the door, I glanced over, and saw witnesses still being interviewed in the dining room, Carter among them. From the glance I saw, he seemed livelier than he had been before. I wished he would just go home, but I doubted I would be that lucky.

Following Winston, Marcus and I walked through the kitchen to the small management office. The room was a cluttered mess, with paperwork strewn about, entirely covering a small desk in the corner. I monitor, keyboard, and mouse were even propped on top of stacks of papers. It would be a miracle if anyone could actually find anything in here.
The tidy front of the house gave no hints to the chaos just beneath the surface.
Regardless, we crowded around the small monitor. An officer was sitting at the desk, manning the mouse.
“From the top, for the Alpha,” Winston said.
The officer immediately complied, rewinding the tape to the moment the attacker walked through the door. The man moved with confidence, not even attempting to hide his face.
“He thinks he can get away with anything,” Marcus scoffed, but I wasn’t so sure.
“It might be more than he doesn’t care if he’s seen,” Jason said.
“A member of the pack would care,” Winston said.
“A member of any pack would care,” Marcus added.
We all looked at each other.
“A rogue,” I said.
I looked at the image again. Over the years I had met thousands of people. I knew all of my pack and a lot of several others. Though I had no photographic memory, I was still certain I had never seen this man before.
“A rogue would make sense,” Winston said. “We don’t have a database for them. They can easily move around. We’ve even encountered some cases where they’d been hired for illegal acts, simply because they can then easily disappear.”
“We won’t let this one disappear,” I said, and nodded to Marcus.
“I need a copy of this tape,” he said.
Winston nodded.
“There’s something else to consider, Alpha,” Winston said. “If this wasn’t a random act, if this rogue was hired as a mercenary to attack Miss Laila, then even if we find this man, she could still be in danger. Until we can fully unravel everything and find the
person who ordered this attack, she’s at risk.”

“Marcus,” I said. I’d already wanted guards to protect Laila and Ava, but this only added urgency. Marcus and I had already discussed some emergency measures to take in this case, so all I had to do was say his name.
He immediately pulled out his phone and brought it to his ear, arranging for Laila and Ava’s protection.
Winston nodded, satisfied.
