Chapter 290
That he hadn’t acted to protect Laila still irritated me. I’d already verbally chewed him out, but that didn’t seem like enough.
“I want to help,” Carter said.
“You can help by staying out of the way.”
“I’m serious,” he said.
“I’m serious, too. You’ll only get in the way.”
“I can help,” Carter said.
“Like you helped Laila during the attack?” I snapped, my anger getting the better of me.
He winced. “I messed up, yeah. I need to redeem myself, not just for Laila but myself too. I’m going to be an Alpha. I can’t…” He looked at his hands. “I’m ashamed of myself.”
“This isn’t a game,” I said.
“I know that,” he said, looking up at me again. He held my gaze and for the briefest moment, I could see the future Alpha in him. He had a long way to go, but the core was there. Once he had some experience, he would likely make a half–decent leader.
Right now, though, he was still too young. I couldn’t see how he wouldn’t get in the way. And his simply being around me made my blood boil. He said he wanted to prove himself to Laila? Why should I even let him?
“There’s something you should know, before you jump so quickly to want to try to work with me,” I said. “I fully intend to pursue Laila romantically.”
Carter straightened, his face going hard. “She’s my mate.“”
“She was mine first.”
“You didn’t want her.”
“Things were complicated then,” I said. “But they aren’t anymore, not for me. I’m going to pursue Laila and I’m going to win her heart.”
Jason lifted his chin. “I don’t care how powerful you are as a full Alpha, I’m not going to let you win. The Moon Goddess gifted Laila to me. She’s mine.”
The way he spoke, like this was some challenge to him. I’d made my intentions known and now he was determined to outdo me.
But he was practically just a boy. I was an Alpha, who shared history with Laila, and a child. I already loved her, and not because the Moon Goddess told me so. What did Carter even know about Laila other than what she looked like? They’d barely known each other long enough for him to truly be in love.
If Carter wanted to see this as a challenge, I could to at least enough to know I wasn’t going to lose.
I was going to be the one to win Laila’s heart. And once I had her love, I was never going to let go of it again.
Laila’s POV
Ava, fortunately, could never stay mad at me and we repaired our mother–daughter relationship quickly with a few hugs and a late–night snack. Fixing things with Hannah was more difficult, and she still wasn’t talking to me in the morning when she left for her classes.
“She’s mad at you, Mommy,” Ava said over cereal.
“I know,” I replied, frowning. “But I’ll find a way to fix it.”
