“That’s not fair,” Susan said “The attack happened on Moon Ridge territory. That gives him some responsibility.”
“So let the police handle protection,” Annette said. “Instead, he sends his personal guard. They are only supposed to be protecting the Alpha’s family and important pack members. Not a disgraced receptionist.” She looked at me. “A wolfless.”
“I have a wolf,” I said.
“One who is so weak, it hardly matters,” Annette said. “Can’t you see how helpless you are? You need the Alpha to protect you. What if he hadn’t been there last night? We’d be reading your obituary this morning.”
‘Annette, please,” Daisy said, just as Susan said, “That’s too far.”
“I’m only saying what everyone is already thinking,” Annette continued, undeterred. “If you are so weak, Laila. If you have so little to contribute. If you care so little for our pack. Why don’t you leave our Alpha alone? Go steat someone else’s name and pretend like you are good at.”
Staying calm, I slowly stood. Daisy and Susan seemed ready to defend me, but didn’t know how. Daisy looked worried. Susan frowned, glaring at Annette.
These two were quickly becoming my friends, but I didn’t want anyone fighting my battles for me. Jason already did more than enough of that.
“My wolf may not be strong, but I am no weakling. I protect what is mine. Alpha Jason sees the value in me too, or he would not strive to protect me as much as he does. What you are suggesting is for me to run away and hide, but I will not do that. I will face my problems head on. I won’t be made to feel scared, and I won’t be intimidated. Not by the person who actually wants me dead. And not by you.”
Annette huffed. “Be brave if you want. It won’t change what you are.”
“I’ve dealt with bullies like you all my life,” I said. “You don’t frighten me. You bore me.
Annette narrowed her eyes.
“I think you’d better just move along,” Susan said.
Annette looked from her to me to the guard near the doorway, then shaking her head, moved along.
When she was deeper into the office, I sat back down.
“Ignore her,” Daisy said. “She’s always a bit of a grump.”
Susan still looked in the direction Annette had gone. “Watch your back, Laila,” she said, a warning, before she too disappeared
into the office.
Daisy’s worry soon vanished into an easy smile and we continued the day.
Annette had been full of hate and bluster, but deep down inside of me, I worried she might be right.
My weakness was costing the pack money and causing problems for Jason, and myself. I had needed Jason to defend me in the restaurant or the encounter could have ended in my death.
I needed to be stronger. My wolf was what she was, I couldn’t change that.
But maybe there was something I could do, could learn, that would help the wolfless side of me.
I thought about it through the rest of the day. As I was leaving the office, I told the guards, “I’m going to the pack house to speak with Alpha Jason.”
They seemed surprised but didn’t argue. They drove me to the pack house. Once there, I hopped out of the car and went to
Jason’s office. There, he was sitting behind his desk.
