Chapter 291
Laila’s POV
“Alpha Jason insists,” Marcus said, when I started to turn away the guards that were at my door. “And he relayed to me that you had already agreed.”
“I didn’t think he’d be assigning an army,” I said

Marcus gestured to some of the guards, who were already stepping away from the rest. “These will stay at your house to protect it. They will make certain that your home is always safe and never tampered with.” He gestured to the other, smaller group.” These will follow and protect you and Ava.”
The smaller group consisted of four guards total, which meant two for Ava and two for me. That was a much more manageable number, though I still wasn’t overly happy with the idea of two lumbering guards looming over Ava while she was at school. With her frequent absences, she already had a hard time keeping friendships. This likely wasn’t going to help things.
“I don’t want them to frighten Ava.”
“Their job is only to protect,” Marcus said. “They don’t have to be up close. They will do what they can to keep enough distance to do their job but without alarming Ava or –”
A small gasp emitted from behind me, and turning, I saw Ava standing there. Only, where I had expected there to be fear in her eyes, she looked up at the guards in awe.
“You are going to be protecting me?” she asked.
One of the guards nodded.
Her eyes went wide and hopeful. “Like I’m a princess?”
The guards glanced at each other. One shrugged. The other looked back to Ava and nodded.
A smile blossomed across her face. “Mom! I’m going to be a princess. Everyone at school is going to be so jealous! I can’t wait to show my friends.”
I opened my mouth to argue, but then closed it again. If this was how she felt about it, I guessed that was a good thing? I’d rather she be excited than scared.
I didn’t like that this extra layer of protection was even necessary, and I still worried about her and would worry about her always. But if she was okay with it…
That was probably the best that I could hope for.

While Ava might have been excited with a pair of looming guards following her around everywhere, I wasn’t as thrilled, especially as I walked into work. One of the guards stayed in the lobby, doing their best to appear inconspicuous, but actually stuck out in an obvious way. The second guard disappeared outside, likely doing perimeter checks around the building.
Daisy was so curious as I approached reception that she looked like the questions were about to burst out of her. Before I could even sit down, I quickly explained what had happened at the restaurant. “Alpha Jason thought it best that Ava and I have some additional security.”
“That makes senses,” Daisy said. “I can’t believe that happened! An attacker, right in the middle of the restaurant!”
“What’s this?” Susan asked, overhearing. Others were coming in now, some congregating nearby. After I filled Susan in on what happened, she nodded, “Alpha Jason is right to assign guards. It sounds like someone has it out for you, Laila.”
I didn’t want to admit that I had enemies, but there could be no denying that Adelaide and Brittany both had it out for me. That didn’t make them guilty of this, though. With Jason’s public divorce announcement, anyone who liked Brittany and blamed me could be acting on her behalf all on their own.

The thought that someone random could have arranged this filled me with more dread than the idea that Brittany or Adelaide could have been responsible. The unknown was much more frightening that the known.
“I think it’s a waste of money and resources,” Annette said. She’d been close enough to hear our conversation. Though she hadn’t been a part of it, she had clearly been eavesdropping. “Alpha Jason wouldn’t offer this protection to just anyone, and Laila isn’t even part of the pack. It’s an insult to all of us that pay our taxes that our funds are being spent to protect a weak
outsider.”
