“Stay. Eat,” he said to me.
“What about you?”
“I’m starting right now,” he said.
I was at an utter loss as he turned and rushed out of the restaurant.
The waitress watched him leave and then came over. “He paid for a pizza. You still want it?”
I really should just go home, but… my stomach rumbled. After my training session with Jason, I’d worked up an appetite.
“Yeah,” I said. “Thank you.”
She nodded and went back to work.
As I sat there, glancing around at all the college students, I tried and failed to not feel like the oldest person in the room.
Maybe I should have just gone home after all.
Jason’s POV
“We are narrowing down the attacker’s identity,” Marcus said. “We have a visual record of him but no name yet. Investigator Winston was correct, he is a rogue and likely a mercenary.”
“He’s committed other crimes?” I asked.
“Yes. He’s already wanted for robberies and assaults. The police had been working on tracking him. This case helps escalate that. The camera caught him at a very clear angle, giving more details than the police had before. All of the officers and soldiers of the pack have been given updated images and are on the lookout for him.”
I leaned back in my chair. We were in my office now, and after what had happened earlier in my gym, I was both wired and exhausted. My body was on edge, missing Laila, wanting her, having to hold back. It made it difficult to think straight.
Though I was pleased the investigation was moving quickly.
“A hired goon,” I said. “We still need to find out who’s pulling the strings. But if we can get him into custody, we can put some pressure on him. Guys like this act tough until they are in shackles. Then they’ll do whatever they need to, to weasel out of consequence.”
“I hope you are right, Alpha,” Marcus said.

“Me, too.”
I hated that Laila and Ava remained in danger. Having the guards assigned to her helped. Knowing she now understood basic self -defense also helped. But she shouldn’t need those things. She shouldn’t have to live in fear of the shadows around her.
“I want to be alerted the minute he is seen,” I said. “I want to be there when he is caught. I don’t care if it’s during the day or the middle of the night. I want to be there and confront this man myself.”
“Yes, Alpha.”
Around 3am, my phone began to ring. I’d been having trouble sleeping, so I was still awake. I quickly grabbed the phone and answered it.
“Alpha,” Marcus said. “The attacker has been spotted in the warehouse district. The police are moving in. I know you said you wanted to be there…”
“Get the car ready and a few of our men,” I said, already out of bed. “I’m not missing this.”

I ran down to the car, meeting Marcus and a few guards. We all piled into an SUV, and rushed to the warehouse.
