The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 297

Jason’s POV

As I pinned Laila’s attacker to the ground, the guards and officers swarmed around us, securing the scene. Head investigator Winston was there as well, though he approached slower.

We’ve got him, Alpha,he said, when I didn’t inially back away, still trying to hold back on the impulses that demanded I press my teeth into the attacker’s throat to keep Laila and Ava safe. Don’t forget the mission, here.

In saying this, Winston was giving me a subtle warning. We need him alive. I appreciated him not using those exact words for the attacker to hear and understand, or it would have given away some of our leverage in the conversations yet to come.

With great physical effort, I pulled back from the attacker, allowing him to be handcuffed and pulled upright.

That wolf is crazy!the man said.

Enough out of you, said one of the guards, who roughly yanked the attacker to his feet.

Winston walked to the man, tilting his head at him. What should we call you?

I’m not telling you my name. I’m not telling you anything.

Fine. Then we’ll just call you Bozo, like the clown that you are,Winston said.

The words seemed to cut into the man’s pride and he scowled. Don’t call me that.

Then give us a name to use.

Peter.

Peter. Good,Winston said, then turned to look at me. I had shifted back to human form and stood at the ready. Marcus had found me in the crowd and was just as ready to assist me.

What do you think, Alpha?Winston asked. Would you like us to drag him to the station? Or would you prefer to have your little chat before we take possession?

Before,I said.

Winston nodded. You heard him, gang. Everyone back up.

At Winston’s order, the police started to back away, while Jason and his guards moved in.

What’s this?Peter asked nervously. I have my rights.

You are in Moon Ridge Pack lands,I told him. Whatever rights you have are given to you at my discretion, as Alpha.

Peter swallowed hard, his eyes going slightly wide with fear.

You recognize me, don’t you?I asked. From just the other night. When you tried to stab the woman I love.

Peter paled. Ththat was your girl? She was there with some other guy.

A low growl escaped my throat.

He scrambled backwards, hitting the brick wall behind him. He was afraid of me. Good. He was right to be. I was one smartass comment away from tearing his head off.

You might live longer than the next five minutes if and only if you give me the information that I want to know,I said.

Wwhat’s that?

I stepped closer to him, close enough to strike if I had to. All the while, I glowered, making no effort to hide my open hatred for this man. He was less than dirt in my eyes.

Who hired you?I asked.

His mouth snapped closed. His gaze moved left and right quickly, as if he was looking for a way out. But there was no escape for him. Even if he could get beyond my immediate vicinity, Marcus and the guards were circled around us, and beyond that, the police were waiting, pretending not to watch.

The attack at the restaurant. Who hired you?I asked agam, with more venom this time.
