Jason’s POV
In what must have been a flimsy effort to disguise herself, Brittany had donned a red wig and was wearing some out of character baggy clothes. But I knew her well enough to know the way of her walk if not from her scent alone. The amount of perfume she wore couldn’t hide her identity from my Alpha senses.
“Now?” Marcus asked.
“When she enters the building,” I said. “To be sure. I don’t want her to find any way to weasel out of this.”
Marcus nodded.
“Who is that?” Carter asked.
“Be quiet and watch if you must,” I grumbled softly, silencing him.
Brittany glanced around and I held my breath as her gaze flitted over the crates we hid behind. A moment later, she looked away again. Quickly, she slinked through one of the doors to the warehouse and disappeared inside.
“Now,” I told Marcus.
A
“Now,” he said into his phone.
Brittany screamed from inside the warehouse. At once, I stood up and rushed to follow her, aware that Marcus and Carter were moving behind me. I pushed through the door, and found my guards surrounding Brittany, who looked panicked.
“Brittany,” I said, and she jumped. Facing me, her wig fell slightly askew.
“I don’t know who that is,” she said, and quickly righted her wig.
I stepped forward, right to her, grabbed the wig and pulled it off
“So it’s me,” she grumbled. “But I have reason to be here. You have no right to jump me like this.”
“Why are you here?” I asked.
“Just inspecting an entrepreneurial venture.”
“At 4 in the morning.”
“If I came during the day, they would only hide things from me.”

“That your contact called you an hour ago and told you to meet him here didn’t affect your decision to come down here? And in disguise?”
“I don’t know what you are talking about,” she said, lying straight to my face. She did it so easily, so convincingly, it was no wonder I had fallen victim to her deceit for so long. But I was smarter now. I knew she couldn’t be trusted, and listening to her with that knowledge, the lies were much easier to discern.
For too long I had allowed her to manipulate me, and because of that Laila had been hurt. I’d never let that happen again.
“No one believes that,” I said.
“I don’t know, you guys. Are we sure she’s involved?” Carter asked. “She’s trembling.”
Marcus and I both snapped our attention to Carter.
“Jason’s always been hard on me…” Brittany said in her softest, weakest voice. “He’s never liked me very much. He always sees the worst in me. But you believe me, don’t you?”

Brittany was spewing lies, and while the rest of us had built up an immunity to it, Carter was vulnerable. Looking at him, at the way his eyes went soft, I could almost imagine how I must have looked when I had met Brittany the first time, believing she had been my mate.
I wondered if she had somehow led to me even then, convincing me to make the worst mistake of my life in choosing her over Laila. But no, I couldn’t fully blame her. Ultimately the choice had been mine and I needed to take accountability for that.
