“We know you are working with Peter,” I said.
“Who?” she asked
“We know you hired him to attack Laila,” I continued. “With how he came at her, you told him to kill her, didn’t you? Not just
attack her?”
Her eyes went somehow even wider, and filled with tears as if on command. “I don’t know how you can accuse me of these things, Jason. Wasn’t I a good mate to you? Didn’t I always try hard to keep you satisfied? Why is nothing I do every good enough?”
“Stop this perfonnative bullshit,” I said. “No one is buying it.”
Again, her gaze slid to Carter. Carter stood there, his hands clenched into fists like he was physically restraining himself.
“You still see the good in me, don’t you?” she asked him.
“Stop talking to him,” I said sharply.

“I think we should hear her out,” Carter said.
My anger spiked. “Stay out of this Carter.”
“I’m just saying… Would it really be so surprising if you fumbled a second mate, after you fumbled your relationship with Laila so badly?”
I turned toward him, my fury guiding me.
Marcus, subtly, stepped in the way. The move was risky, as I immediately wanted to take my anger out on him instead. By stepping in the way, he was going against me. That could be treason.
But I knew Marcus well. I trusted him.
He was trying to calm me down. As I did, I realized antagonizing the future Alpha of another pack shouldn’t be something I did on an impulse, as infuriating as I found him in this moment.
This conversation with Brittany wasn’t something that needed to happen here. We had enough evidence to take her into custody and deliver her to the police station ourselves.
Confession
I looked over at the guards. “Take her to Investigator Winston. Have him lock her up in a cell. We’ll get a confession from her later.”
“I have nothing to confess!” she shouted, fear entering her eyes. To someone who didn’t know her, like Carter, the reaction appeared genuine. Her voice quivered and her tears fell. She looked for all the world like a wilting damsel in need of a rescue.
But it was an act. She was a viper in sheep’s clothing.
To another guard, I gestured toward Carter. “Don’t let him interfere.”
“We need to talk about this, Jason,” Carter snapped, acting tough now. Maybe Brittany’s wailing was triggering his protective Alpha instincts. Those instincts were severely misplaced.
Brittany was dragged out first, with me following. My guards were keeping Carter in the warehouse for now, until the rest cleared out.
Once Brittany was secure, I unlocked my phone. It was early, but I couldn’t wait to tell Laila about this. She deserved to know
that she was safe

I found her mmmber and I hit call.
Laila’s POV
I startled awake to the sound of my phone ringing. My sleep had been off and on all night, and I wasn’t sure how restful it was. I felt restless, like I had been having a nightmare.
Looking at my phone, seeing Jason’s name, was a comfort.
