Despite the hour, I couldn’t wait to find out what was really going on. I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep anyway, so I got out of bed, dressed, made sure the guards knew to take Ava to school if I wasn’t back in time, and then rushed to the police station where Jason had told me they were taking Brittany.

I still couldn’t believe what I had overheard Carter saying. Jason had once fallen under Brittany’s spell, choosing her over me. Now, Carter seemed to be going through the same motions. Though I hadn’t any intention of pursuing Carter, it still came as a shock to relive to the past all over again.

How could this keep happening? Was Brittany truly so convincing, so enticing, that she could rally the confidence of men at first meeting?

At least Jason seemed to be on my side this time, but I remained worried that could and would chatige.

After rushing, when I finally arrived at the station, Carter and Jason were arguing out front. They both seemed angry, though Jason was holding himself back, his tone calm albeit strained. Carter was much closer to shouting and seemed unable to stand still, pacing around.

“You are making a lot of assumptions,” Carter said. “She could have been at the warehouse for the reasons she said. We have no proof that she is in fact the person who hired that attacker.”

“You don’t find it suspicious at all that after arranging to meet the person who hired the attacker, Brittany arrives at the exact time and place? At that time of morning?” Jason countered.

“Maybe she couldn’t sleep.”

“Or maybe you are allowing her to manipulate your own Alpha impulses against you.”

“You’re too bitter to see things clearly,” Carter said. “You see the worst in people, just like she said.”

“You are too young to know when you are being lied to,” Jason replied.

“You don’t know anything about me.”

“Yet you presume to know me?”

Carter growled, and seeing that things were escalating, I quickened my page, eager to intervene.

“Stop this, both of you,” I said.

At once, they both looked at me. Jason relaxed marginally. Carter remained uptight.

“Laila. Surely you can convince him of reason,” Carter said. “Tell him that Brittany deserves the presumption of innocence, just like anyone else.”

“You are missing info, Carter,” I told him. “Brittany has a history of hurting Jason and me.”

“I don’t believe it,” Carter said. “How can you take his side?”

“Because I’m on her side,” Jason replied. “You’d believe Brittany over the woman you claim is your mate? The one you want to impress and apologize to?”

Carter blinked. “But… But, L..”

“Brittany lied to me about things Jason said all those years ago,” I said, “and then lied to Jason about the reasons I left. Not to

mention…”

“She drugged me,” Jason said. “Twice.”
