Chapter 311
That didn’t bode well for the odds of getting our hands on that wolfsbane cure. I wasn’t going to be deterred, however. There was too much riding on this.
“I need an audience with the Alpha,” I said. “It’s very important that I be able to talk to him.”
“Alpha, I live to serve, of course, but I’m just not sure if that’s possible.“.
That the Lycan Alpha wouldn’t meet with my Ambassador was one thing, but to turn away another Alpha was another. Mutual respect was how the packs lived in tandem peacefully. To deny a mere meeting with another Alpha was a grave insult.
It seemed, however, that the Lycan Alpha didn’t care if he made friends or enemies.
“I need to speak with him,” I pressed.
“I’m sorry, but the Lycan Alpha views any diplomacy mission with suspicion. I will do my best to get you an audience, but it would be easier if I could give him a reason.”
If the Lycan Alpha knew about my curiosity over a possible cure for wolfsbane, he might derry me instantly without even hearing me out. To even get our feet in the door, Laila and I would need a different tactic.
If diplomacy wasn’t accepted, then…
Oh. Suddenly, I had an idea.
“When you arrange the meeting,” I said, “Tell them it is for a business proposal.”
“That might work,” the Ambassador said. “I’ll see what I can do.”
“Don’t fail me,” I said firmly. It wasn’t a threat so much as a declaration of urgency. It was enough to have the Ambassador’s voice drop, much more serious now.
“I will make this happen,” he said. Then, lighter again, he asked, “If I may, Alpha, just what is the business proposal?”
That was the problem. “I don’t know yet.”
Later, on the phone with Laila, I explained the situation and what we needed to come up with. “Any kind of business proposal would do. Surely some kind of trade route between our packs would benefit us both. The Alpha of the Lycan pack is apparently a suspicious man. We can’t make the deal too good or too bad, or he won’t hear us out long enough for us to mention the cure.”
“Should the proposal be legitimate?” she asked. “Or should we just puzzle something together?”
If he
“I know you don’t do things halfway,” he said. “If you are up for it, let’s pull together a real proposal. If he accepts it, great. If not, oh well.”
“Alright,” she said.
“My Ambassador is working on getting us permission to cross the pack lines. You will be part of my entourage, the businesswoman in charge of this deal. That would give you reason to be with me when we approach the Alpha.”
“Okay.”
“That just leaves Ava,” he said. “I was thinking that
“Ava won’t be coming with us,” Laila said at once.
“She’ll need protection. You can bring her to the pack house and
“No,” Laila said firmly. “After what happened with Sarah, I don’t want her anywhere near there, even if she was ready to leave
the hospital. And your father won’t be happy either, now with Brittany in jail. I’m not taking any chances.”

That she couldn’t trust my family stung, but I understood where she was coming from. My family had done very little to earn her
trust.
“Someone will need to watch her, “I said.
“I’ll find someone else.”
With how stern she was being, I knew I wasn’t going to win this argument. So I let it go. For now.
“We need to be ready at a moment’s notice,” I said. “We may only have a small window to enter the Lycan pack.”
“I’ll be ready,” she said.
“And the proposal?”
“I’ll have something by the end of the day.”
She was a miracle worker.
“This is going to work,” I told her. “We’re going to get that cure.”
Laila replied, “I’m not leaving the Lycan pack without it.”

chased, but I was just a child.”
Jason humnied, and said, “Maybe civil war, then.”
“I don’t know,” I said. “I doubt was a memory. It’s probably just my nerves manifesting.”
“It’s possible,” Jason said, “But we still don’t know the full truth of your past. Before you came to tuy pack… do you have any idea who you really were?”
“No,” I said.
“But we know you were poisoned. Just a child. Maybe you did escape something like your dreams.”
“I don’t know,” I admitted. It was so terribly frustrating, not being able to remember who I was, and what I had experienced. If I could recall who had given me the poison and why, maybe I could at least know why I was viewed by anyone as a threat. I’d been just a little girl. Why poison me?
“Several packs had civil wars in our lifetimes. The Lycan pack even suffered one. I was told this was why they had become so isolated, though they’d always been mysterious,” Jason said.
“We won’t be welcomed,” I said. “Not even with the invitation we have.”
“We“re outsiders in a pack with closed borders,” Jason said. “We need to stay on our guard at all times.”
I didn’t want to admit fear, but in the wake of my dream, I couldn’t pretend to be unaffected. “I’m nervous.”
“I’m apprehensive,” Jason said. “But determined. We need that cure and nothing is going to stop us from getting it.”
“What if the cure doesn’t exist?” I asked.
“It does,” Jason said. “It has to.”
I nodded, hoping he was right.
“No matter what happens,” he said. “Stay near me. I will be there with you the entire time, and I will keep you safe. You have nothing to fear here.”
“Jason…”
He squeezed my arm where he had been touching me, and then let me go.
“Get some more rest if you can,” he said.
“I don’t think I will be able to sleep,” I said.
Jason frowned. “I wish I could protect you in your dreams as well.”
I did, too.
Eventually, the plane landed. It had been a long time since I had flown, so the whirl outside of the window made me hold my breath. The bounces on the landing itself had me gripping the arm rests of the chair – until Jason took one of my hands in his Then I gripped tightly onto him instead, but he didn’t seem to mind.
The brakes kicked in and I squeezed my eyes shut.
But, soon, to my relief, the plane slowed and came to a stop.
“There,” Jason said. “The worst of it is over.”
“I really hope that’s true,” I said. Even though the fear of the flight was over, I still had a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. We hadn’t landed in friendly territory, and though I was confident that my business proposal was sound, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to give it, despite the Ambassador’s promises.

“Don’t worry about Ava, Riley said. “William, Hannali, and I can take turns to make sure she’s never on her own. And with Jason’s guards, nothing is going to happen.”
“Thank you, Riley,” I said.
Riley smiled.
Then we both glanced over to William.
“Right, William?” Riley prompted.
He was quiet a moment, but then he said, “Whatever you need, Laila.”
“Thank you, William. Riley,” I said.
They stayed for a little while longer, while we solidified plans and continued to catch up. Then, we had to go our separate ways. I hugged Riley again. William and I just nodded at each other.
After seeing them out, I returned inside, went to the elevator, and up to Ava’s room. The door was opened a crack as I
approached, but the guards standing on either side of it didn’t seem alarmed. If Ava had a visitor, it was a trusted one.
上
Worry crawled up my throat. Jason had assigned only the guards most loyal to him to this task, and we’d talked about them not allowing Jason’s parents visitation right now. The list of trusted people was so short. What if the guards weren’t as trustworthy as Jason thought? What if they had allowed Sarah into the room, and
