Chapter 312
Laila’s POV
It had been a while since I had sardown with William and Riley, but they both agreed to come to the hospital waiting room to talk. Riley gave me a big hug when she arrived. William was more distant, staying back a few feet, though he did offer me a small smile when our eyes met.
He was clearly still hurt by my rejection, but that he was here at all showed that he was trying anyway, to be just friends, to be here for me when I needed him.
I was incredibly grateful for them both.
After spending some time greeting each other and catching up on how each other was doing, I shared the news about the wolfsbane and explained the plan Jason and I had concocted to get into the Lycan pack territory to try to find a cure.
“You don’t know if the cure even exists,” William said. “Jason is putting you in great danger by dragging you there on a hunch.”
“He’s not dragging me,” I said. “If he didn’t want to help, I would have found my own way there.”
“If wolfsbane only grows in that territory, and if the pack is as secretive as they seem, then they wouldn’t be inclined to share the cure if they had it,” Riley said. “She has to go. What’s the alternative? Stay behind and suffer the poison forever? To let Ava suffer too?”
I was glad that Riley was able to see my side of things. William grimaced slightly, before speaking again.
“I want you both cured, of course, but I don’t want you in danger to do it. Jason should go alone. Or I’ll go,” William said.
I shook my head. “This is my problem, and I’m going to be the one to solve it. Besides, Jason’s going to need me to get into the pack. They don’t care for diplomacy so Jason wouldn’t be able to go alone.”
“What’s the plan?” Riley asked.
I explained about the business proposal, which I had been working on since getting Jason’s call. He’d called back a few hours later, saying that the Ambassador in the Lycan pack was able to get them an audience, but it was soon. They had to leave first thing in the morning.
William frowned. Riley tilted her head ever so gently.
“Is Ava going?” she asked.
“No,” I said. “And that’s part of the reason I called you here. I’m sorry it’s been so long. I should have reached out sooner, just to see how you both are.”
“We could have reached out too,” Riley said. “Sometimes life happens, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t friends and aren’t here for you.”
“Still, I feel bad asking for a favor,” I said.
“Don’t,” Riley insisted. “You need us to watch Ava while you are gone?”
“I’m not sure when she’ll be released,” I said. “I don’t know how long I’ll be in the Lycan pack. Hannah has promised to visit every day, and Jason has already assigned guards to protect her. But I worry about her being alone all the time.”
I hung my head. “This surgery was supposed to make everything better. Instead, it uncovered new problems.”
“New explanations,” Riley corrected. “Now we know the real problem has always been wolfsbane. Knowing the problem is the biggest part of the battle. Now you can move forward toward the solution.”
I hoped she was right, but inside, I worried that solving this problem would only uncover more somehow. Ava never had much luck, and I’d always felt like it was my fault. That hasn’t changed even after discovering the poisoning. After all, she inherited

“Alpha,” satt one of the stewards of the flight. The second was opening the doorway for us to leave the plane. “You better come quickly. There might be a problem.”
“What kind of problem?” Jason asked. He unbuckled his seatbelt and went with her toward the door. I quickly did the same, following them.
Jason moved first down the stairs. I followed Tris, two steps behind, enough to see what had the stewarda nervous. It had me
nervous too.
Two dozen Lycan werewolf warriors were standing on the tarmac in a circle around the plane. Not just the stairs, but the whole plane. Like they didn’t just want to kill us, but dismantle our entire existence.
None of them looked friendly, all tall and broad and wearing stern expressions. All exuded menace.
