Laila’s POV

“No, honey,” I said gently. The rope in her eyes seated me, but I couldn’t lie to her just to keep her happy. Eventually she would learn the truth, that Jason and I were not going to get together, and she would be even more trart.
Better to squash this early, so spare her the hurt.
“Jason and I are just friends now. And this is only a business trip.”
Her smile dimmed ever so slightly and I hated myself for taking that away from her.
“Well,” she said, rallying slightly. “Maybe a business trip could become a romance trip.”
I didn’t have the heart to ruin her dreams a second time, so I stayed quiet.
Run
The word was crystal clear in my mind, and in a voice I knew I could trust. I pumped my small legs as fast as they could go, but I was so young, I couldn’t go as fast as the wolves that chased me.
I had nowhere to go. Nowhere to hide. I was just a little girl and they were strong wolves in their prime.

“What was I saying?” I asked, my voice shaky, just like my hands that I rubbed together.
Jason frowned deeply. “Run.”
A shiver ran up my spine.
“What were you dreaming about?” he asked me, but I wasn’t ready to tell him. The dreams were too real, too frightening, and I still had no idea what they meant.
“I think I’m just stressed,” I said, deflecting.
His gaze stayed on me, scrutinizing.
“I was running from something,” I said, giving in, just a little. “But I don’t know what, exactly. War? Fire. Fighting. I’m not sure
all that I saw.”
“Border dispute?” Jason asked. That was the most common reason for werewolves to attack each other, but in that case, they generally kept the fighting between the warriors of each pack. Sometimes border towns would find themselves caught in the middle, but it was unspoken werewolf rules to try to keep the innocents out of the fight as much as possible.
“I don’t think so,” I said. “There was a town, and it was burning. People were dying, not just warriors. Everyone. I was being
