Laila’s POV

“There’s only one bed,” Jason said, matter–of–factly, as if he’d known at the time it was going to be this way.

“Jason.”

“Before you say anything, yes, I planned this, but no, not for the reasons you might be thinking.”

I was thinking that he was going to try to seduce me, and I worried that I wouldn’t want to stop him. Being here felt like we were behind enemy lines. “If they attack you, I might not move fast enough if you are in a different bed, especially if I am drugged or worse. If you are beside me, I can react quickly.” His frown deepened. “No one will be able to take you from me.”

The thought of being stolen away in the night sobered me, immediately eliminating all of the sexy thoughts that had been flashing through my mind.

“You think they would try something like that?” I asked,

He combed his hand through his hair. “I don’t know, and that’s what has me turned inside out. The Arnbassador has been here for years, but even he isn’t entirely sure what goes on. I can’t risk it. I won’t.”

A growl returned to his voice, and I instinctively reached out to calm him and his upset wolf. The moment my hand touched his chest, he reached out to me and pulled me closer. I folded into his arms like I belonged there, and we held each other for a little while. I listened to his heartbeat, strong and steady, allowing it to calm me.

“Don’t be angry about the bed,” he said softly.

“I’m not,” I said. How could I be, knowing he just wanted to protect me?

Eventually, we parted, but didn’t go too far from one another, still swaying now and then into each other’s orbit, just to feel

close.

“We have some time before our meeting tonight,” Jason said. “I wouldn’t mind looking around the town.”

“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” I asked. “We aren’t going to be welcomed.”

“We saw the warriors,” Jason said. “I want to gauge how the everyday pack member reacts to outsiders. Maybe they won’t be as bad.”

“What if they are?” I asked.

Jason looked at me. “You should stay here.”

“Absolutely not,” I countered. “If you are going out there, then so am I.”

A muscle ticked in Jason’s jaw, but he didn’t try to stop me again.

The looks started in the hotel lobby. Not just the front desk attendant was looking at us with a hard gaze now, so too were the other guests.

“How did they get a reservation?” whispered someone behind us. “Since when do they allow outsiders in a place like this?” “Since when do we allow outsiders into the pack at all,” whispered their companion.

Stepping outside, we picked a direction and started walking along the sidewalk. The hotel was in a charming small town, right on the main street, surrounded by what seemed to be cute little shops and restaurants.
