Chapter 317
“We were invited here by the Alpha,” Jason said.
“It doesn’t matter,” the older woman said. “Not to them.” She had graying hair and heavy wrinkles on her face which told of a hard life. “You’ve heard of the civil war? Maybe not what happened after. Alpha told us all the war had been started by outside forces. Instigators from beyond Lycan territory. As such, the younger generations learned to be afraid of any unknown. Even many of my generation forgot how things used to be, I remember though, those peaceful times.”
“You could have them again,” I said.
She smiled at me, but it wasn’t an honest smile. It was the kind given to those who just didn’t understand what they were
talking about, to humor them. A bless your heart kind of smile.
“Enjoy your time in this pack,” the older woman said, “But don’t get too attached. Things have been this way for over twenty years now. If you think that’s going to change, you have much more faith than me.’
“”
When we decided the front desk attendant was not going to return, we said goodbye to the older woman and returned upstairs.
“I guess I have my answer,” Jason said. “The everyday pack member is no kinder than the warriors.”
I wasn’t so sure. It could have been as the older woman said. The younger generation were simply taught to be afraid and the older generation forgot. In time, they could turn around to seeing things differently, but it would take an Alpha who would lead the charge.
This Alpha seemed to have aspirations in the opposite direction.
We stayed in our room until it came time for our meeting, then we met the Ambassador in his car outside of the hotel.
“You are in for a treat,” the Ambassador said. “I received word that we are going to the Alpha’s palace, which is usually off- limits for outsiders. Maybe he isn’t so against diplomacy as I had thought.”
“Or it’s another intimidation tactic,” Jason said. “Why would a pack Alpha need a palace?”
“It’s just how things are done here, after the old pack house burned down during the civil war.”
Yet another change implemented during the civil war, under this Alpha. I was curious to meet him, to see the kind of man he
was.
We drove for a little while before turning into a driveway barred by an iron fence. The driver rolled down his window and gave his credentials to one of the servants out front. Warriors were everywhere, outside and inside of the gate, when we were finally let through.

“Most people are warriors here,” the Ambassador said, catching my curious glances out the window. “Even civilians are trained for war and combat.”
The driveway was long, winding through what seemed to be an entire forest, before coming out on the other side. Then, like it had sneaked up on us, and an entire, massive palace was there. It was a mansion, taller and bigger than the hotel, with massive columns and golden trim.
There were more people around than I had been expecting, and vans with the back doors opened, the inside filled with flowers and other golden decorations.
“How wonderful,” the Ambassador said. “The pack’s annual full moon ceremony is tonight. I wasn’t sure if we would arrive in time to see the decorations.”
The car pulled up to the front of the building, were a warrior stood, blocking the rest of the road. Following the Ambassador, we exited the car. Another warrior led us into the building, where we were made to wait in a long line.
At the front of the line, greeting the other visitors, was an older man with salt and pepper hair. His mustache and beard were trimmed to perfection, and his black suit was offset only by a purple sash that wrapped from one shoulder to the opposite hip.
