Chapter 318
Laila’s POV
Lycan Alpha Richard looked away so quickly that I wondered if I had imagined the look he had given to me. He had no reason to look at me that way. As far as he knew, I was just some business associate of Jason’s, here to deliver a mutually beneficial proposal.
Though even if he was aware of my more intimate connection with Jason, that still didn’t account for the discerning way he had looked at me, like he had been trying to see straight through me.
No, it made more sense that I had just imagined it.
Slowly, the visitors greeting the Alpha moved forward. He spent only a few minutes with each set, and I worried he would only give us the same amount of time. My proposal was solid, but I would need more than a handful of minutes to properly explain it, especially if I wanted to convince him to actually agree.
Especially if I wanted to steer the conversation toward if the Lycan pack developed a cure to wolfsbane and if they might share it.
“Everything is going to be fine,” Jason whispered to me.

“I know,” I said, even though I didn’t. Without meaning to, I leaned into Jason’s space, as if I was drawn to the warmth he naturally exuded as an Alpha.
It was such a strange feeling, not being alone. For so long, I had faced every challenge and every difficulty without anyone by my side. Now that Jason was here, now that he was not just claiming that he wanted to stay, but actually showing up for me… I was too quickly becoming adjusted to this unusual feeling of being supported and cared for.
But I was also afraid what I would do if I lost it.
The line continued to move forward, and eventually it was our turn to meet the King. The Ambassador gestured toward Jason with an unnecessary flourish. “My I present, Alpha Jason from the Moon Ridge pack.”
Lycan Alpha Richard sized up Jason, not looking at me once, which reassured me I had imagined his earlier look. Jason did the same to Richard, his expression unimpressed. For a moment, they just glared at each other.
“Alpha,” Richard said blandly, as if in acknowledgement.
“Alpha,” Jason replied, just as blandly. I wanted to elbow him, to remind him why we were here, but I knew that would be too obvious. Instead, I lightly cleared my throat. Jason blinked. “This is Vanessa, one of our best businesswomen. I placed her in charge of this proposal.”
Richard looked at me. “Vanessa? Did you go back to calling yourself that? I thought you were already revealed to be Laila, a childhood companion of Jason’s. Mother of little, sickly Ava, who as I understand it, is also Jason’s child.”
I froze, cold all over.
A low growl escaped Jason’s throat.
Richard slid his gaze to Jason. “Don’t come into my pack expecting to make a fool of me. We don’t allow outsiders here, but kam not deaf to the news from the other packs.”
Jason’s hands curled into fists, and I knew he was about to start a fight. Where Ava and I were concerned, especially after learning the truth, Jason had a difficult time not simply jumping straight into protective mode. Those instincts were so strong in him that he would act without even thinking, allowing his impulsive wolf to take the reins.
If I didn’t intervene, and quickly, we were definitely going to die here. Even the Ambassador was going pale.
