Chapter 329
We followed the crowd through the ballroom to the open doors and out onto the outside patio, surrounded by beautiful gardens. “Maybe we should just have some drinks,” I said.
“That might help,” Laila agreed.
“Agreed.”
I looked around for a servant carrying a tray of champagne. There were many scattered throughout the patio and gardens. When one came close, I reached out to stop them. I was certain she saw me, we made eye contact, but then she turned around and went the other direction.
Strange.
I led Laila by the arm toward another servant. This one too, upon spotting us, abruptly turned, avoiding us.
“Are we being ignored?” Laila asked.
“It seems that way,” I replied. Spotting another servant, I started to walk forward, but this time, Laila held me back.
“They could have been told to ignore us,” she said. “I don’t want them to get into any trouble because of us.”
I supposed she was right, but I didn’t like it. This was a blatant sign of disrespect, which was something, as an Alpha, I was born and breed to not tolerate.
“I just want to get through this,” Laila said. “We’ve already caused enough trouble. We can’t draw any more attention to ourselves.”
Her hand on my arm steadied me, and with a deep breath, I released some of the anger that I had been holding in. I’d known I was annoyed, but I hadn’t realized how tense I was becoming.
Only Laila had a way of calming me down.
Everyone mingled – except us, sticking to the outskirts. Lycan Alpha Richard arrived a short time later, and then soon after that, the lights of the patio were dimmed. The full moon began to crest over the trees
It was a beautiful moon tonight, and my own wolf was delighted. He wanted to howl, to race under the moonbeams, and I was tempted to let him. But we were in an unknown land, with unknown dangers, so I easily held back. In my own pack, during our own full–moon ceremonies, I would indulge. In stranger lands, even my wolf, as eager as he was, restrained himself as well, misapprehension and mistrust dimming the free spirit.
The ceremony was affecting the others though, the members of this pack, especially when Richard threw his head back and
howled.
As if trained, the members of his pack tilted their heads back and howled, all in unison.
To my surprise, a familiar howl came from my right. Laila was joining in.
1 lightly tugged on her arm. “It’s not our place,” I reminded us.
Others were looking over. I knew Laila had wanted to keep a low profile. She was doing the opposite of that now.
“I can’t… control it,” she said to me, fear in her eyes, as again, she tilted her head back and howled.
As the moon lighted higher, Lycan Alpha Richard started to… glow. His skin took on a pale sheen, like moonlight, as if it was reflecting off of his skin. Soon, the other members of his pack did the same.
My skin did not glow, neither did that of my pack’s Ambassador, who I now noticed across the patio. This must have been something that affected only Lycan pack members then.
