A growl sounded from the back of Jason’s throat.

Richard narrowed his eyes. “There are many dangers that haunt this family. Things you do not understand.”

“Then explain it to me,” I pressed.

“You shouldn’t be troubled. They are my responsibility. You only need to do as I say.”

I frowned.

“If there are dangers, fine,” Jason said. “But why is Laila being denied from going to certain parts of the palace? Surely things are safe within the palace walls.”

“Danger is everywhere,” Richard said, opening his book again. “Do as I say, and everything will be fine.”

“But, Uncle –”

“I am busy now, Laila. Run along.”

I stood, shocked and appalled. He was treating me like I was a child. Jason, too. And since he was the Alpha of this place, in total power, there wasn’t much I could do about it, not even as his niece. As a visiting Alpha, Jason was just as powerless.

Jason looked like he wanted to argue or worse, shift and challenge Richard to some kind of dual. I placed my hand on Jason’s chest, soothing him as much as I could. He looked at me, and his growling ceased. His face remained unhappy though, even after we stepped into the hallway.

“We need to get into that annex,” I said.

“It doesn’t seem likely,” Jason said, glaring back where presumably the guards were.

I considered this. “Maybe if we split up…”

Jason looked at me. “I could draw the guards away, giving you an opening, but I don’t like the idea of you going anywhere that could be dangerous on your own.”

I didn’t either, but this seemed the only way to actually find information. Richard wanted to keep me in the dark, and I was tired of it. I wasn’t a child. I didn’t need to be coddled.

“You won’t be far,” I said. “If anything happens, I will call out to you, and I know you’ll come running.”

Jason frowned deeper, staring at me. I returned his gaze, unyielding.

“It’s the only way,” I said.

Finally, he exhaled through his nose. “Fine. But at even the slightest notion of danger, I need you to run back to me.”

“Okay,” I promised.

Jason held out his arm, and after looping mine back through his, we returned to the outskirts of the

ballroom.

“Ready?” he asked me.

“Yes.”

He released my arm, then immediately swiveled back the way we came. “I see them,” he said. “Go.”

At once, we started running in opposite directions, Jason toward the guards, me toward the annex.

I ran into the long hallway, then dipped around a corner where I stopped, listening. No footsteps followed me. Jason must have successfully distracted the guards – at least for now.

Knowing I had no time to lose, I quickly moved further into the annex. It was only one floor with four doors, two on either side of the hallway. One of the doors was slightly ajar, and peeking inside, I could see a bedroom.

Gently, I pushed the door open. I half–expected to see Delta there, but the room was presently unoccupied, though very lived in. The bed was still unmade. Old photos littered the top of the dresser,

a Mom, a Dad, and a little girl. including one that called to me. It was of a smiling family of three
