Chapter 340
Laila’s POV
When Jason and I were alone in our shared room, I said, “I want to know who Delta is. I want to talk to her.”
“The doctor said she is a madwoman.”
“Maybe she is,” I said. “But why hide her away? There’s something going on here, Jason.”
“A cover up?”
“I don’t know. But the poisoning… A rebel attack? A situation where all the children have to flee, but I’m the only one who gets lost? It feels like too much.”
Jason hummed, considering. “Alpha Richard won’t like us snooping around.”
I quirked my brow at him. “Since when do you care what he thinks?”
“I don’t. At all. But it could be dangerous.” He walked toward me, and gently pulled me into his arms. “I will protect you no matter what. From him or from anyone else. But I want you to be aware of the danger.”
“We’ll be careful.”
“You don’t understand,” he said. “There’s already threats all around us. At night, our door is locked from the outside, and every time we step beyond the walls of this room, I feel we are being watched. Followed.”
I had suspected so too, but hearing an Alpha think so, with his advanced senses, confirmed it.
“I don’t want to give up,” I said.
“I don’t either,” Jason said. “I don’t think we have to. But I want you to be aware, any move we make will be reported to Richard.” Jason squeezed me a little tighter. “Richard is your family now. I’ll understand if
“I don’t care if he is family,” I said. “I am still my own person. I was still poisoned and driven from my home. My parents were killed. I want to know why, and if Richard won’t tell me, then I’m going to find out on my own.”
“I’ll protect you,” Jason said. “No matter what.”
We talked briefly about where we should start looking, and I remembered seeing a strange woman who seemed to disappear. That must have been Delta.
“We could check any routes she might have gone from the ballroom,” I said.
Jason agreed and together we walked that way. The ballroom was entirely empty, our steps echoing as we walked through. We exited out the door I had chased Delta through, which took us to a side hallway that seemed to lead to a type of annex building attached to the palace by a long hallway.

We made only three steps into the annex when we were stopped by a pair of guards.
“You aren’t allowed to go this way,” one of the guards said.
“Maybe you haven’t heard the news,” Jason said. “But Laila is your lost princess, returned to you.”
“No one is allowed to go this way,” the other guard said.
“I’m part of the family now,” I said.
The guards stood firm. “Those are our orders and we will not break them.”
“Orders from whom?” Jason asked.
“Our Alpha.”
I straightened. “And just where is he right now?”
I burst into the library with Jason behind me. Richard was sitting at a small table, sipping coffee and reading, the spine of his book pressed into the tabletop.
“You are having us followed,” I said. That hallway to the annex building had been clear when we entered it. Those guards that stopped it hadn’t been assigned to it. They’d been assigned to us.
“Yes,” Richard said simply, not denying it.
“If I’m your lost princess, why am I being treated like a prisoner?” I asked him. “Why do I need to be watched and followed?”
“It’s for your own protection,” Richard said.
“I am more than enough to protect her,” Jason said. “She doesn’t need to be treated like this.”
Richard closed his book. “With respect to a fellow Alpha, you are not her mate. You are not her husband. You are not her Alpha. Laila is now part of my Alpha family, and that makes her protection my
responsibility.”
