Chapter 343

Laila’s POV

+20 Bonus

Jason, pulling me against him, shielding me with his body, dragged me back into the house and far away from the door and windows. He pressed me to the wall, protectively standing in front of me as Richard followed as in.

I sent guards after the sniper, Richard said. But from that distance, they probably got away. The trackers will be sent next.I was shaking, though I felt blank on the inside. It was difficult to string thoughts together. Could I have been in shock? Ignoring Richard, Jason turned back to me. He cupped my face with his hands, turning my face back and forth, before dropping his gaze to inspect the rest of my body.

His arm was still bleeding, the bullet had slashed through his suit coat and the shirt underneath. Both were drenched with blood. With a trembling hand, I reached up and touched his arm, near the wound without touching it. You are hurtI managed, though my voice sounded distant from me, like someone else had said it using my body.

It’s just a graze,he said. I’m fine. But are you hurt?

I looked down at myself, trying to focus. Idon’t think so

I hope you both can now see the danger that Laila is in,Richard said. I hate for you to have found out this way, but thank the Goddess, Laila wasn’t permanently injured.

Jason started growling before he even turned to face my uncle. Injured? She could have been killed!

All the more reason that she stays at the palace from now on,Richard said. Our trip is canceled. And I hope you both can see how much you need to listen to me. I know this pack and its dangers Only by obeying me without question will you truly be safe.

I’ve heard enough,Jason said. I’m taking her back to our room.

Your cutI said.

I’ll clean it myself in our bathroom,Jason told me.

With his hand on my shoulder, he started to urge me forward. But I felt weak and wobbly on my legs. Jason seemed to recognize this at once, and scooped me up into his arms.

We will talk later,Richard said, but both Jason and I ignored him now.

Jason carried me all the way to our shared room, then gently lowered me down to my feet at the foot of the bed. I sat down.

Stay here,he said. Relax. I’m going to clean myself up.He walked into the bathroom and softly closed the door behind him.

I sat on the edge of the bed for a time, listening to the running water of the sink as Jason tended his own wound. I wanted to help, but my hands were still shaking. In trying to assist, I worried I would do more harm than good.

But staying here alone allowed iny thoughts to wander far more than I would have liked.

I had almost died. With a silver bullet, I wouldn’t have even felt anything. One minute I’d be here, and then I’d just begone. Leaving Ava alone. Never learning the truth of my past. Never seeing how things would turn out with Jason.

JasonGods, he would have had to witness it. I tried to think of the same situation in reverse, if the bullet had killed him instead, and felt sick to my stomach.

Before I knew what was happening, my feet were moving, seemingly of their own volition. I moved to the closed door of the bathroom and knocked.

Jason pulled open the door at once. He was shirtless, his arm bandaged. His eyes were haunted though.
