Chapter 346

My cheeks burned. He couldn’t just say things like that! Yet, despite my embarrassment, my body responded, already preparing to receive him again.

He scented the air, likely detecting my lust, and his eyes went darker.

I held up my hand before he could pounce. He looked at my hand, then at me in confusion.

We can go again,I said. But in the shower.

His confusion immediately shifted to glee, as he grinned. He reached for me, pulled me to his body, and all but ran, carrying me, into the bathroom.

I laughed as he turned on the water, all without lowering me. But soon, my laughs became moans and I lost myself again.

Much, much later, Jason and I finally emerged, dressed, from our bedroom. To our surprise, as we descended the steps, we saw many servants rushing around, some hastily cleaning, while others put up streamers and floral decorations.

Richard was there, directing. When he spotted us, he smiled and came over. I trust you are both feeling better.

I blushed again.

We’re fine,Jason said curtly.

Richard nodded, and didn’t press, thank the Goddess.

What’s going on here?I asked.

Preparations for the ceremony that is to be held in your honor,Richard said.

I blinked, assuming I had misheard.

Jason recovered quicker than me. You can’t mean to still have this event. An attempt was made on Laila’s life.

There are always dangers,Richard said. But each guest will be thoroughly checked. No assassins will be allowed into this place.

It’s too soon after the other attempt,Jason said. We should at least delay.

Nonsense. We will not show weakness.

I think we should cancel,I said. Given the circumstances, II’m not sure I even want to stay here.

I had been thinking about this, during my marathon sex with Jason, in our moments of recovery. If my life was in danger here, I had no reason to stay. I had come for information of the cure, which we now had. Planning the receipt of the cure could be arranged from a distance.

You are being paranoid,Richard said, some of his good humor fading. This was a oneoff incident, and has been taken care of.

Taken care ofhow?Jason asked.

The gunman is dead,Richard said. I saw to this myself. No one attempts to harm my family and lives to tell about it. This has always been the way of this pack, especially after the civil war. We do not take chances.

“Yet you take chances with Laila’s life. If there was one gunman, there could be more,Jason said.

I’m confused,Richard said. You wanted freedom, but now you want more confinement. Which is it?

I’d like to leave,” I said. I missed Ava, and the safety of my own bed.

Richard narrowed his eyes. Do you not trust me to keep you safe?

I trust Jason,I said.

Then trust him to continue to keep you safe until after the ceremony. If you wish to return to your secondary pack at that point, I will not stop you. But as princess, you have an obligation to your people. They want to reunite with you. Are you truly so scared that you would deny them that right?
