Laila’s POV

We didn’t stay much longer with Richard after the decision was made. Wanting to speak privately, Jason and I returned to our bedroom, where he closed the door behind us. I glanced at him from the other side of the room as he came near, my gaze catching on his arm where blood was starting to stain his shirt.

His wound must have bled through the bandage again. Grazed by a silver bullet, even an Alpha would have trouble fully healing with any kind of speed. That it still hadn’t scarred was enough to worry me.

I rushed to him and took his arm. As I drew closer to the wound, he finally seemed to notice.

“It’s taking it’s time healing, isn’t it?” he said. His tone was light, not fully taking this seriously. I found that incredibly frustrating.

“A few inches in another direction, and it could have killed you,” I said bitterly.

He lifted his hand to my cheek and gently tilted my head so my gaze lifted to his. “Or you could have. I don’t regret my choice. It’s just a graze, I’ll heal soon enough.”

“Jason…”

“I’d suffer much worse than this to save you. Really, I got off easy.” He laughed a little, just for a moment, before his face turned grim. “The danger is far from over. I do not like the way Richard is handling this.”

“He’s treating us like prisoners,” I agreed. “And making a lot of demands…

“I have half a mind to carry you out of this place without looking back.”

“We can’t go anywhere without that cure,” I said. “Ava needs it.”

“And you.”

I shook my head lightly. “If it was only me, I’d say we could just leave. I’ve dealt with the poison this long, I could keep doing so. But Ava… she’s had so much trouble, so many health problems. When she grows up, she might want to have kids of her own someday. Would she deny herself, knowing she could pass on the poison? No. It has to stop here.”

“We’ll get that cure, for her and for you.” Jason brushed his thumb along my cheekbone. “Ava is our priority, of course. But I’m not going to let you suffer anymore either.”

“I’m used to it,” I said.

“All the more reason you should be able to live without it,” he said. “Besides… what if you wanted to have more children? I know you would refuse if you knew they would be poisoned.”

I glanced away, my cheeks heating slightly. “I’m not thinking about future children…”

“No,” Jason said. “Not right now. But in the future…”

I glanced back, my eyes catching on Jason’s, seeing the hope there. It was as if he had a whole future plan for us, all of it pivoting on me. At once, my heart soared but also I trembled, an old fear surfacing.

Jason and I have been through so much together since reuniting. He had proven himself to me time and again. Even his being here spoke volumes for his loyalty to me.

I remained afraid. I had thought we’d be together in the past as well, and that had blown up in my face in the
