Chapter 349

Laila’s POV

I rushed to follow her as she disappeared around the corner, deeper into the bookcases. I made the corner long seconds after her, then saw her further down the aisle. I gave chase, following her there, only to see h another corner. By the time I reached that second corner, and came around it, Delta was gone.

This area was something of a crossroads, with paths going in all directions. I tried a few different ways, to spotted her, but I must have chosen incorrectly because I never did. It was like she had just disappeared int air.

As I continued glancing around, I realized I was in a section of official-looking books. The sign on the book read, legal. One book was pulled slightly out more than the rest, as if purposefully placed that way to catch

Along the spine, the words formed, Rules for Lycan Pack Succession.

Had Delta brought me here to see this book? But why?

Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted one of the guards. They hadn’t trusted us within the confines of the lib alone, following us even into the stacks. Knowing that, even if Jason found a back entrance, he’d likely be sto before entering. Or we’d be brought back in front of Richard to explain ourselves.

I had no idea how I would explain being caught with a book about the line of succession. Richard might see th a threat, though I was curious about it.

If my father had been true Alpha, didn’t that make me his heir?

Under the eyes of the guard, I backed away from the section. I turned, walked right by the guard and returned the main section of the library where Jason was anxiously standing, looking around. When he saw me, he marginally relaxed.

“Where did you go?” he asked, when I approached him.

“I thought I saw something,” I said.

He gave me a curious look, and I raised and lowered my brows. He seemed to know then, and looked up to wher had come from, as if Delta would reappear there.

When he looked at me again, he opened his mouth as if to say something, but stopped himself as a servant approached.

“Forgive the intrusion,” the servant said, bowing low. “But Alpha Richard wishes to speak with you both at once “We just spoke with him earlier,” Jason said.

“I’m sorry, Sir. But he insists that it’s important.”

Jason huffed at a harsh breath, and the servant paled a little, like we might refuse. I knew we wouldn’t, we had no intention of getting the young servant in trouble. Jason was just frustrated. I was frustrated too.

“We’ll see him,” I said. “Will you lead the way?”

“Yes,” the servant said, with visible relief. “This way, please.”

Jason lightly placed his hand on the small of my back, guiding me forward. The guards fell into step behind us

with the warden.

This time, Richard was in his office, standing at the window behind his desk. His hands were clasped behind h back, his gaze was off, far into the distance.

The servant gestured for us to enter, then closed the door behind Jason and me. The guards remained qut in th hallways.

“Please. Sit,” Richard said without looking at us.

“I’d prefer to keep standing, if it’s all the same to you,” Jason said.

Jason glanced at me, but I shook my head. I wasn’t going to be the only one sitting for this. If Jason was standi

so was I.

“Suit yourself,” Richard said, and turned around.

“What is this about?” Jason asked.

“Only good things, I assure you,” Richard said. “Laila, I was hoping that you would be interesting in taking a more proactive role in the planning for your reintroduction ceremony. It only seems fair that you have more of say, seeing as it is intended to be a celebration for you. We want things to be exactly as you would like them.”

Chapter 350

“I… suppose…” I said. I had so many other things on my mind that planning a party seemed to be the leas concerns. However, I could see the benefits. Planning meant spending time outside of my bedroom, and/ meant possible opportunities to learn more about my past.

“Good. Alexa!” Richard called. The door opened again behind us. Jason and I turned to see a young woman early twenties enter. She had large blue eyes and short light-brown hair with bangs that hung down into Her smile was bright and magnetic, immediately disarming my suspicions.

“Yes, Alpha?” she asked as she stepped into the room, though she was smiling at me.

“Laila has agreed to help with the ceremony,” Richard said.

“How, wonderful!” she said, her smile beaming now. “I have so many ideas, Laila. May I call you Laila?”

“That’s fine,” I said.

“Tell me,” she said, smiling wide. “What are your opinions on masquerades?”
