Chapter 348
He sounded so definitive, so sure, that I could only nod and accept this.
We stood for a moment in silence. I waited for the awkward feeling to fall around us, but it never really came. Any quiet moment with Jason and me, even here, seemed comfortable. That didn’t mean, however, that we should be lulled into a false sense of security.
“We can’t just hide in here,” I said. “We need to be out there, doing something.”
“What do you suggest?”
“I still want to know what happened to my parents. Maybe we can find some records in the library. If there isn’ anyone left in the palace who could tell us the truth, perhaps the books would reveal it.”
“It’s worth a try,” Jason said. “Though we will have to be subtle with our true intentions. Richard isn’t going to like us snooping around.”
“Richard doesn’t like anything we do,” I said.
“Fair,” Jason replied. “We’ll be careful.”
Plan decided, we stepped out of the room and back into the hallway. At once, we noticed a pair of guards waiting for us at either side of the door.
“What’s this?” Jason asked.
“For the princess’s protection,” one of the guards said.
“We are to guard her,” said the other.
They’d been following us since we arrived at the palace, but now it seemed, they were allowed to be more open
about it.
“I offer enough protection for her,” Jason said, a threatening growl lining his words.
The guards stepped back from him, just a little. “We are under orders from the Alpha.”
There would be no arguing of that. The guards would fear the wrath of their own Alpha to anyone else.
Jason narrowed his eyes.
“Fine,” he said. “Then be useful at least. Direct us to the library. “If we are going to stay cooped up here, we should at least be provided with some means of entertainment.”
The guards glanced at each other. For a moment, I thought they might deny us, but then one said, “Very well. Follow us.”
The library was beautiful, with multiple floors of books and stacks all through the center. Some others were there, perhaps researching, perhaps simply reading. Several alcoves lined the walls, with benches and cushions, little reading nooks.
A few sinall rooms were connected to the library. A few had opened doors, some were closed. One of the signs on the open
doors read Periodicals. Another said, Computer Room.
A sign on a closed door read, Records. Jason glanced around as I reached for handle. Locked.
Of course it wouldn’t be that easy.

“I’ll search for another way in,” Jason said. “Stay in my line of sight.”
“Alright,” I said.
Jason started walking toward the computer room, and I turned my attention toward the stacks.
The door was only partially hidden here. With a key, I could sneak inside without rousing any suspicion, but without one, we would have to break down the door. That would easily be noticed and we would have no time to snoop around to uncover the files that we needed.
Hopefully Jason could find a more discrete entrance, but that didn’t seem likely.
A figure peering out from around the side of one of the bookcases caught my eye. I had seen her before, watching me from the door to the ballroom.
She was watching me now, like she had something to say.
