Laila’s POV

I could sense Jason’s rising tension as keenly as if I was the person who was feeling that emotion. Thoug continued to escalate, even Alexa seemed to sense it as well, as her talking slowed. We both looked over t and Jason squaring off against each other like they were getting ready to fight.

The Alpha scents ran rampant in the room, assaulting my nose. This wasn’t just posturing. They getting r actually come to blows.

The most dangerous place in the world was between two Alphas about to fight, but still, I moved to separa them, fearing that Jason, if he attacks the Alpha of the land we were currently within, would find himself outnumbered and overwhelmed.

Whatever had caused this fight, we could find a way around, to keep the peace. I was sure of it.

I stepped directly between them. Facing Jason, I placed a hand on his chest. He continued glowering at Rich if he couldn’t tell I was there. That couldn’t be though, because soon, his arm wrapped around my waist and tugged me closer to his side, away from the danger Richard posed.

“I will not be disrespected in my own house,” Richard growled.

“Wait,” I said hastily. “Tell me what is going on. Surely we can work this out without violence.”

Poor Alexa stayed on the other side of the room, her eyes wide. She watched things unfold nervously. Inside, no less nervous than she appeared to be, but I pushed down on those nerves, my desire to protect Jason fuelin courage.

“I merely wished for Alpha Jason to accompany for a couple of hours,” Richard said.

“He wants ine to leave the palace without you,” Jason said. “I told him I’m not going to leave you here unprotected.”

“And I told Alpha Jason that you will be safe under my roof. To suggest otherwise is an insult.”

I think I understood now. Turning toward Jason, I whispered, “I will be fine for a couple of hours.”

“No,” he said firmly. “I am not going anywhere without you. Not so long as we are here.”

‘And I’m serious, too. If you deny a direct request from this pack’s Alpha, then you are putting us in more danger than if you would leave with him for a time.”

Jason’s jaw clenched, but he didn’t argue. I could see the realization cross his face. He knew I was right.

Lowering my voice even further, I promised, “I will stay in my room with the door locked the entire time you are gone. Nothing will happen to me. I will be careful.”

Finally, he dropped his gaze away from Richard. It softened as it fell onto me. “If anything happens to you, I will never forgive myself.”

“Nothing will happen,” I said. “Not if I keep myself safe.”

I didn’t much like the idea of being locked away for however long this took, but I would do it for Jason’s peace of

“That is far too much trouble,” Richard said. His Alpha hearing must have allowed him to overhear me de speaking softly. “There is no need for you to go to such lengths. You will be protected in the full of my pala will see to it personally.”

Jason immediately returned his glare to Richard. “It’s not enough. I wish to have my own guards brought in my own pack -”

“You want me to allow even more outsiders into my pack?” Richard scoffed. “And your warriors, especially am just to allow that?”
