Chapter 369

Laila’s POV

“What? We can’t leave,” I said at once.

“We aren’t staying,” Jason insisted. “It’s far too dangerous for you here. Now that we know what he’s planning… Laila, he’s only going to get more desperate, more obvious in his attempts to kill you.”

“We need that cure for Ava,” I said. “That’s why we came here. We’ve already been through so much -”

“We’ll come back at a later time. We’ll bring an army if we have to, or I’ll send in spies. We’ll find the cure a different way – a way that doesn’t directly put you in danger.”

“No.”

“Laila-”

“No, Jason.”

“Ava needs you alive, Laila. I do. The longer we are here, the more danger you are in, the more brazen Richard is going to be. I would die to protect you, but if I do, then you will be without anyone. I can’t…”

Setting the book aside, he bushed both hands through his hair. Sensing his distress, I stepped into him, wrapping my arms around his waist. His arms came down around me almost instantly, holding me close, keeping me there.

“I can’t go back,” I said softly. “Not yet.”

“Why?” he asked, just as low.

“It’s not just about the cure anymore,” I said. Inside of me, I knew that to be true. Though saving Ava remained my most vital goal, it was no longer the only one. I felt rejuvenated, like I had suddenly been filled with a life’s purpose.

“All of my adult life, I’ve pretended to be someone I’m not,” I said. “To be myself was too lonely, too sad. I had no one, and no hope.”

He squeezed me. His voice apologetic, he said, “Laila, I-”

“I’m not saying this to make you feel guilty,” I added. “Only to help you understand.”

He fell silent, but leaned in to kiss the top of my head, a silent apology.

“I didn’t know that I had a home, or parents, or a pack of my own, That I had somewhere I belonged. But now I know, I have a home. A people. But they are being cruelly led by a false leader. My uncle is a killer. He stole the leadership from my father and now uses it to mistreat my people. How can I allow that to continue?”

Jason was quiet a moment. “What do you want to do?”

I considered it. “I want to expose him. I want to bring him down and let everyone see him for the kind of vicious murderer that he is. My parents deserved better. I did. I can’t change the past but I can make it better for my people moving forward.

Jason leaned back. Lifting his hands, he cupped my cheeks. “You sounded like an Alpha there for a minure,” he said, pride in his eyes. “A leader.”

I shook away the compliment, as well as his hands. “I want to stop my uncle. The cure is still the priority, but it’s not the only priority anymore.”

“We can do both,” Jason said. “We’ll find a way.”

‘We’ will?” Lasked, some hope in my voice.

“Of course, we,” he replied, like it was all so simple. “I am here at your side, your right arm. Imight be an Alpha, Laila, boat any
