Turning again, I faced Richard once more. “Thank you, uncle. I’m sure Jason is tired. I know I am. Perhaps someone could show us to our room now? We were on our way there, weren’t we?”
Richard glowered a little, before he breathed deeply and called for a servant. A servant rushed forward without question, her eyes downcast.
“Take these two to one of the ready rooms in the royal wing. That room will now belong to Laila.”
“Yes, Alpha,” the servant said.
“Follow this servant,” Richard said. “We will speak later.”
I nodded. Jason stayed tense.
The servant turned and started heading for a different entrance than Richard had been leading me before. Rather than a stairwell down, we were taken up to the third floor.
“Excuse me,” I said to the servant. “Are there any bedrooms in the lower floors?”
“No,” the servant said. “There’s nothing down there but dungeons and storerooms.”
I reached for Jason’s hand and clung onto it, only now truly understand the danger I had been in
The servant led us to a room that was even bigger and more decadent than the one we had stayed in before. Part of the royal wing, I learned, these rooms were meant for the Alpha’s family or very prestigious guests. Curious that he hadn’t allowed us here before, though we had been comfortable in our last room and likely would have refused a move.
The moment the servant was gone, the door closed behind her, Jason and I faced each other. At once, we started trading notes about our time apart. I told Jason about the fire, about Delta, and about the things she had left me in the rucksack which I still carried. In turn, Jason told me about the strange gift, the rush to rescue me, and all that happened in the dungeon, including meeting the old servant Warrick.
“We have to find a way to free him,” I said. “How terrible, he’s been down there all this time.”
“He’ll only be free if Richard is gone,” Jason said.
I frowned, but nodded, understanding what he said was true.
I wrapped my arms around myself, frustrated. I’d only come here to find the cure for Ava, but now I felt a responsibility to this place. This pack was mine. These people were my people, and Richard had been mistreating them. But what could I really do?

At once, memories of the book of succession came into my mind. I took my rucksack to the small table in the room and pulled out the book. Jason followed along beside me, watchful.
“Jason, I… I think I might be the rightful heir to the pack,” I said. “In this book, it says I would have had to have died for my uncle to become Alpha. And that he couldn’t be responsible for that death.”
“Show me,” he said.
Turning to the page that Delta had marked for me, I passed him the book. He read through it, even a few more pages than I had, though I had read it inainly in haste, without the chance to study it yet.
The more he read, the more his face soured.
“Jason? Is there more in there?”
“You are right about the succession,” he said. “But that’s not all that’s here. The true heir is entitled to a vast furtune, hidden to all but those of the main line, with the blood of the true Alpha. It must be some kind of magic. The heiz is the only one who knows the location of the treasure.”

“A fortune?
“I wonder… since you are alive, perhaps Richard can’t find the treasure. The magical location must have never been revealed to him,” Jason said. Lifting his gaze to me, worry sparked in his eyes. “Laila…”
