Chapter 371
Laila’s POV
The next day, Jason and I went down to meet with Alexa in the ballroom, where she was overseeing the decorating for my upcoming ceremony. Alexa waved excitedly, rushing across the floor of the ballroom towards when she saw us
“I’m so glad you are safe,” she said to me. “When heard about that fire, we were all so worried.”
“I’m alright, thank you,” I said, giving her a small, appreciative smile. “How are you doing? How is the planning going?”
Jason didn’t approach to be a part of the conversation, but still lingered nearby, leaning against one of the walls, watchful and
protective.
“I had to make a few executive decisions, for the sake of time,” Alexa said, lowering her head a little. “I’m sorry about that. If there’s anything you want to change -”
“I think it looks beautiful,” I said, hoping to put her at ease. Honestly, the room was gorgeous, with goldert trim and flowing purple banners. Though, admittedly, I cared so little about this actual event that she could have picked the ugliest designs imaginable and I wouldn’t have cared. “But I did want to talk to you about the masquerade.”
Having a masquerade had been Alexa’s initial idea that she’d approached me with. At the time, I hadn’t known what to say, but now that I’d given it more thought, I had decided on an answer.
“I think that’s a wonderful idea,” I said. “But rather than everyone having a mask of their own design, I think we should all wear the same mask, to show pack unity.”
Alexa’s brows rose high. “Even you? Shouldn’t you stand out?”
“No,” I said. “I want to show that I am part of the pack, part of the whole. I might be someone who is lost and returned, but I belong here.”
Alexa’s smile widened as she clapped her hands in front of her. That’s such a wonderful idea!” she said. “I absolutely love it We’ll alter the invitations at once to include this, and we’ll have to decide what the masks should be! Oh! I have so many ideas!”
“I’m eager to hear them,” I said, taking on some of her excitement, which seemed to be contagious.
My plan wasn’t entirely without intention. Though I did like the idea of unity, I also didn’t want to stick out overmuch, for Richard to find and follow. Additionally, I already knew Richard wasn’t going to go along with any of this. The man had kied for his role as Alpha, he would want to show himself off at all occasions. H push for decadence would make him stand out, easier to keep track of.
“Show me everything,” I said to Alexa. “I want to see it all.”
Alexa smiled brightly, and led me further into the ballroom, where some outside workers were hanging banners and drapes. They weren’t dressed like the servants, and I didn’t recognize them. They seemed to be workers from the outside, brought into help with the event.
I stopped a few as I went. “Hello,” I said. “I’m Laila. Nice to meet you.”
The two workers froze in their tracks, their eyes wide, like they hadn’t thought they’d be addressed directly
“You… are speaking to… us?” one of them asked.
