Chapter 372

“We can already see you are just like him,” added the first, with a gentle smile.

The compliment made my heart sour.

“Thank you,” I said. “I mean that.”

“We are happy to -”

“What’s this?” Richard snapped, appearing at the top of the long stairwell that led down into the ballroom from the second

floor.

Hearing his voice, Jason pushed away from the wall and came to stand at my side. The workers froze, their faces paling. Even

Alexa stood a bit straighter.

Richard descended the stairwell with careful, measured steps, all while keeping a firm glare on the workers, whose eyes went

downcast.

“I do not recall giving any lowly worker the right to speak to the lost princess,” Richard said. “Yet here I see two workers dallying about in their work to speak to someone so far above them.”

The workers cowered, making themselves small, clearly in fear of Richard. Knowing what I knew of Richard, they likely had a right to be. But this only made me more incensed, more determined to remove my uncle from power.

As Richard reached the bottom of the stairs, he waved his hand and two guards began to approach.

I hurried to stand in front of the workers. “I spoke to them first. I stopped their work to ask them questions. If anyone should be punished, it’s me.”

Richard still his hand as he looked at me. Slowly, lowering it, he approached himself.

“You would take punishment for these…” He didn’t even give them a name, just gestured toward them.

“They are members of this pack, working to make my ceremony a success. Of course I would.”

“Someone will be punished,” Richard said.

Jason stepped forward. “I think you should let this go.”

Richard’s gaze sliced to him. “You aren’t challenging me, are you? Because that sounded like a challenge.”

Jason crossed his arms. “I simply see no reason to punish people for talking. In a pack, no one is above an Alpha should treat the pack members with respect,”

“You wish to give me a lecture, pup?”

“If one is needed,” Jason said.

Richard narrowed his eyes.

The workers shuffled nervously, but looked at Jason with more respect than the fear they showed their own Alpha Richard must have seen it too, because his hands clutched into fists. Jason tensed, ready for anything.

“This was my fault,” I tried again, but neither of the two seemed to be listening to me now. Whatever this was, it felt beyond something I could easily fix.

Jason wasn’t going to let Richard punish these innocents, but Richard was too proud to back down, especially under the advisement of another Alpha
