The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 376

Chapter 376

Larry’s eyes went wide, and suddenly clear, like the mere thought of Richard losing control had instantly sobered him. “You would become our Alpha? Our leader?”

“I don’t… I mean…”

“You would rule like your father. You would finally bring us freedom from this tyranny. We’d know peace again.

“I’m not sure it would be me,” I said. “Anyone would be better than Richard, right?”

Larry considered all my words for a moment before he reached out and took both of my hands in his. “It’s too dangerous and you are too precious. He’s an older wolf now. You will outlive him. Come back when he is gone and you will be safe.”

“I can’t just leave like this.”

“Please,” Larry said. “Take that cure to your daughter. Don’t look back until you read Richard’s obituary.”

Jason’s POV

As Larry pleaded with Laila, I could already see in her eyes what she was going to do.

She was one of the bravest women I had ever met. She had run and hid from me, but that was not out of fear, but a way of rebuilding her life after my perceived rejection. Even in that act, she had been strong-stronger than she’d ever given herself credit for.

I knew, without doubt, she would want to reclaim this pack and take her father’s place, to lead it as her own. Even if she didn’t

know it yet.

The thought tore me up inside. One part of me was endlessly proud. The other side wanted to beg her to reconsider.

If she chose to stay here, to rule, we would be pulled apart. I was on an extensive vacation here, but I still had my own pack to lead. I couldn’t remain here forever. Soon, my own duties would pull me home again.

It would separate us.

Never in all of my studying of pack dynamics and histories had I ever heard of two Alphas aligning romantically, converging their packs and their lives because of their love. Packs were taken by force. Love had little to do with it.

I would support Laila, always. But…

Maybe we were doomed after all.

My wolf snarled at the idea, and my own heart rebelled against it. But I didn’t know any other way. There was no other way.

Damn it all.

Too soon, the day of the fight arrived. I had trained hard, I knew I was ready, but each minute dragged me toward the inevitable parting with Laila. I tried to push those thoughts away, focusing on the task at hand.

II she wanted her own pack, I would deliver it to her. The first step of that plan was to prove to his pack that Richard wasn’t infallible, and that meant defeating him in a fight.

I dressed in shorts and a tank top, with sneakers, and my knuckles wrapped, ready for a fight.

Laila stood near the door to our bedroom, worrying her hands together.

“I have a bad feeling about this,” she said.

“It will be fine,” I said, aiming for confidence. It wasn’t the fight I had a bad feeling about. I was going to win, I knew it. “Come on. Let’s go together.”

The fight was being held on the grounds, on a field beyond the palace. Bleacher seats had been built to accommodate onlookers, and already, they were packed. This wasn’t supposed to be a true challenge, but it was looking more and more like one. Medical tents were arranged beyond the public-facing areas, near the entrance for the fighters.
