Laila’s POV
The vial was small and delicate, with only a single mouthful of liquid within it. This was only one dose, but that was all we really needed. From the start, my plan had only ever been to cure Ava. The doctor had kept his promise in finding a way to get me this, and because of it, I had no real reason to stay here anymore.
We could leave before things escalated with Richard, before Jason had to fight. Then Richard wouldn’t have to cheat, and Jason’s life wouldn’t be in danger.
Leaving was really the smartest thing we could possibly do.
And yet…
If I left now, I would be leaving my home pack in Richard’s cruel hands.
Jason stormed forward. Grabbing Larry by the shoulder, he swung him around to face the angry Alpha. “Did Richard put you up to this? Did he tell you to try to convince us to leave? To run, so he wouldn’t have to face me in the fight and lose?”
“No,” Larry said, swaying. “This is my own plan, to try to save you both. If you leave, you won’t come to any more harm.” “But you will,” I said. “The whole pack will, just like you’ve been coming to harm since my father died.”
Larry lowered his head, miserable. “Your father was a good Alpha. The best. He led this pack to some prosperous times, and all of us are eternally grateful for him.” He lifted his gaze to me. “Saving you is only part of what I can do to repay him. You can’t stay here, princess. Richard will never let you live a happy life.”
“He’s already tried to kill me,” I said.
“He won’t stop,” Larry said, not denying it.
“You know more than you are saying,” Jason demanded.
“I do,” Larry admitted.
Whether the drink or the guilt was making him honest now, I couldn’t tell. Whatever it was, I was grateful for it.
“Richard wanted me to be the one to do it,” he said. “To inject you, Jason, with some kind of weakness serum. Those things take time to kick in. He wanted me to do it during the physical before the fight. I told him I wouldn’t. It goes against all of the oaths I’ve taken and codes I’ve followed my entire life.”
“You told Richard… no?” I asked, surprised. Larry was braver than I had given him credit for.
“He told me to think it over, but I’m not going to do it. I won’t,” Larry said. “No matter how much he threatens my reputation, He shook his head. “I’ve lived a good life. I’ve done nothing but good my whole career. He can tarnish my reputation through lies all he wants, but I won’t ruin it for real by doing what he wants. What he demands. He was so angry that poor girl…”
“What girl?” I asked.
“The servant,” Larry said, not really explaining himself but acting like that explained everything
“What about the servant?” Jason prompted.
“He slapped her. I saw her spit out a tooth, poor thing,” Larry said. “He does that Random acts of violence. He’s a vicious man. hiding behind a propaganda wall. For years, people have pulled wool over their eyes. They loved his brother. They wanted to love him too. But he is nothing like his brother.”
“What if…” I glanced at Jason, who nodded lightly. To Larry, I continued, “What if we could remove Richard from power? What if we could free the pack?”
