Chapter 378
“I’d rather you worry about yourself when you are in there,” I said. “Don’t forget, he is going to cheat.”
“I know. I’ll be careful.”
He kept saying that, but I didn’t know if I could believe it. Jason was strong, I wasn’t doubting that, but Richard had already successfully arranged to have my father killed. His brother. He wouldn’t be above hurting another Alpha who wasn’t related.
Jason was in serious danger. He intended to keep me close so that he could protect me, but I was just as adamant that I would protect him. At the side of the ring, I could watch Richard like a hawk. Jason was strong, but he would be preoccupied fighting. T would be watching Richard for foul-play, and I would intervene the moment I saw it
I hadn’t told Jason about this plan, knowing that he wouldn’t approve. If he knew I intended to intervene at the first sign of cheating, he probably would take Richard up on his offer to seat me with the Elder Council.
As we held each other, outside the tent, the gathered crowd began to grow. This was supposed to be just a friendly spar, but it seemed to become something like an actual challenge, with many of the pack in attendance. People were already cheering
Jason kissed me softly. “It’s going to be okay,” he promised. Then he let me go, putting some distance between us. He offered me his hand. I took it.
Hand in hand, we moved further into the tent. The doctor had moved on from Richard, and gave Jason a quick once over. I was wary of him, carefully watching his every move to ensure he didn’t inject Jason with anything or smear him with any cream. The physical seemed entirely genuine. That did little to put me at ease.
With the doctor’s approval, Jason reached for my hand again. This time we walked out the back of the tent and into the arena. Bleachers were arrange all around a circular ring, which was nothing more than a painted circle on the dirt ground.
The crowd cheered and called, everyone seemingly in good spirits. Richard was already at the center of the ring, waving politely. The crowd clapped for him, but when Jason and I emerged, the cheers of the crowd grew even louder, welcoming us, the
newcomers.
As we hadn’t had the ceremony yet, I didn’t know if I would be recognized, but in the crowd, I heard a few loud shouts.
“There she is! The lost princess!”
“Princess!”
I lifted a hand and waved, and the crowd grew louder.
At the same time, Richard’s good humor dimmed and he glared at me. The cheers for me had been louder than the cheers for
him.
At the edge of the painted circle, Jason turned toward me. “Do not cross this line, no matter what happens,” he said, and gave me a pointed look.
I worried my bottom lip. “Laila, promise me.”
“I can’t.”
“Laila-”
“Say your fond words, and let’s get on with this,” Richard called. “Unless you enjoy wasting my time.”
“Go,” I told Jason.
Jason gave me a worried look.
“I won’t do anything reckless,” I promised, and hoped I could keep that promise.

For now, that had to be enough. Jason nodded and backed away frotit me.
As he turned toward the ring, Lacing Richard, his body tensed, his hands forming, fists. It was like he was preparing for war. The rules had already been made clear. The two couldn’t shift until the two minute maak of the fight, allowing them time to show their human strength, and then their wolf strength.
