Jason’s POV

I came at Richard with all the fury I had been holding in since we had arrived here, building slowly with the mistreatment of Laila, and my own being thrown in the dungeons. Finally, I had a place for all of this building rage to go to, a target I could attack with all of my frustrations. I couldn’t kill Richard, I wouldn’t. But I could finally hit him.

And the man certainly deserved a punch.

He deserved more than that, but a punch would have to do for now.

So I threw one, the entire weight of my anger behind it. Richard tried to duck out of the way, but he wasn’t as fast as I was. He caught the punch on the cheek. He growled as the force of the punch sent him sliding back a full two feet over the dirt.

When he’d settled, he spit blood out onto the ground.

“Lucky shot,” he growled, the surged forward toward me.

I blocked a few of his blows, but felt true strength behind them. Richard was no joke, and needed to be taken seriously.

After that, I was more careful, keeping my eye out for openings rather than going straight forward with my attacks. Based on strength alone, we seemed evenly matched.

But I was younger, and had more stamina. A minute in, I could already see him slowing, while I was ready to keep going. Finally, I landed a second meaningful blow directly in his ribcage.

He clutched his chest as he beat over. The crowd cheered, which only made Richard’s eyes flare red. He was enraged, but he couldn’t shift yet. Neither of us could, not for another minute.

“Alphas like you make me sick,” Richard growled lowly. With my Alpha hearing, I could determine what he was saying, but it didn’t seem like anyone else could. “Always handed everything Your whole life was just laid out in front of you. All you’ve ever had to do is not trip over yourself, and you got all you wanted. It was never like that for me. Never that easy. I had to work for everything I have.”

As lightly as he was speaking, I replied, “You had to kill for it.”

Richard huffed. “So what if I did? That’s how things were done in the old days. Now, everyone is soft. Even you, little Alpha. And even my precious little niece who you are so desperate to protect.”

His gaze shifted to Laila, and a spike of fear shot through me.

At once, he pounced, moving as if he was going to attack her. I hurried into the way, but in my rush, I left myself open.

He’d been expecting me to move, to protect Laila. I had been predictable in that way.

As I went to block him, he dodged, withdrew something sharp from under his clothes, and jammed it straight into my side. The blade tore into my flesh, digging deeply. He didn’t leave it, twisting and removing it at once.

1 bit back my cry with clenched teeth as I stumbled forward onto on knee. My body valiantly tried to stitch me back up, but it hurt. My healing wasn’t working.

My side burned hot, and looking down, I could see white and green pus oozing from the wound.

It wasn’t healing, it was festering

“Jason!” Laila cried out.

“What have you done?” I demanded of Richard

“Whatever I had to,” Richard replied.

I could feel my strength wäning, but I still pushed forward, continuing the fight, not giving up. This had never been a friendly fight, and the ruse was up now.

Even the crowd had changed, no longer cheering, watching in silence.
