Chapter 383
Laila’s POV
The next day, after changing into my dress, I couldn’t take my eyes off of Jason in his tuxedo. It was time for the ceremony, at last, and there was a lot to worry about. And yet, in this moment, all I could do was stare at Jason and take in how unbelievably
handsome he was.
From the way he was looking at me, I guessed he felt the same.
“You are the most beautiful woman I have ever known,” he said.
“Are you trying to flatter me?” I asked playfully.
“Yes, but it’s true,” he said.
“Do you think such flattery will earn you something?”
He pulled me into his arms, smiling as he planted a kiss to my cheek. In my ear he said, “Well, I’m hoping tonight resembles last night, with all the things we did.” He lightly licked a wet stripe up my earlobe and I very nearly pulled him back to the bed right there.
“If we succeed in this tonight, we might have reason to stay in bed for a week.”
He groaned. Against my hip, I felt his growing interest.
“Jason. We have to go now or we never will.”
With a grumble he back up away from me, taking his hands off my body and holding them upright in the air. His smile remained, even after he lowered them again. “It’s going to be difficult not pulling you into any shadowy corners to have my way with you.”
It was a very nice thought, but I doubted we would have time for any of that tonight. Once we would leave the bedroom, we would have to be serious, observant, and committed to achieve our goals. We were in a den of vipers, and as sexy as danger could be, I was done taking risks and almost losing the man I cared for more than any other.
“We have to stay focused tonight,” I said, somewhat sadly but not without hope of future trysts, future hidden kisses and stolen moments. We just had to survive the night first.
Jason’s smile slowly settled into something more serious, and though I was sad to see it go, I knew it was time.
He moved to the dresser and retrieved our matching masks. They were plain white wolf masks with pointed ears and holes cut out for eyes. Ribbons tied to the side were to hold it in place, once wrapped around the back of the head. (
Jason tied his own up quickly, then came toward me with mine.
“Turn,” he said. “I’ll help you.”
I did as he asked, Gently, he placed the wolf mask over my face and tied it into place. When it was secure, I turned back around to face him.
“How does it look?” I asked.
“I’d rather see your face, and it makes you harder to kiss.”
“We are supposed to stay focused,” I reminded him.
“I suppose now I’ll have no choice,” he teased, but I knew better than anyone how serious he took my protection.
As suspected, the moment we left our bedroom, he straightened and tensed His hand went to the small of my back, guiding and protective. I couldn’t see his lips, but as he spoke, there was no longer any hint of a smile in his voice
“Stay near me tonight. No matter what happens, I will protect you.”
