Laila’s POV

I finished my drink with Larry, and he retired to his room. I stayed in the sitting room for a while, but soon grew impatient and reentered the hallway. As I once more attempted to approach the office where I felt Laila, I could hear her talking about pack matters with the Elder Council. She was still deep in her work, and my intrusion would only interrupt things. I didn’t want to make things harder for her; she already had an uphill battle ahead of her.

The servants were already moving forward to intercept me, but I held up my hand, acknowledging them. They paused, and I turned around. I only wanted Laila to succeed, even if that meant I wouldn’t get to see her for a while yet.

Heading upstairs, I returned to the room we shared. This had only been a temporary room for us. I wondered, now that Laila was Alpha, would they have her change rooms?

Would she go to the new room tonight? Without me?

Things were changing quickly, and our relationship wasn’t given much time to catch up. I was pleased she was successful, that she was given such a prosperous future. But at the same time and in equal measure, I worried about what the future would hold for us.

Soon, we’d be torn apart. Separated. Whether we’d survive that split, I wasn’t sure.

I changed into my sleep clothes and hovered near the bed, unwilling to crawl into it without Laila. I didn’t think I’d sleep anyway, even though it was late. Not without her here beside me.

Eventually I sat on the edge of the bed but didn’t move father into it. I leaned forward, my elbows on my knees, my hands dangling in the space between them.

I might have entered a meditative state. Time seemed to move around me without my noticing. Genuinely, I had no idea how long I sat there before the doorknob turned and I looked up just in time to see Laila slip into the room.
