My head was swimming. So quickly, I had become the Alpha. I’d barely had time to process before being thrown in the deep end. My uncle had created quite the cesspool of issues that needed sorting through, and all of them felt too vital to ignore, to put off so I could sleep and celebrate.

The Elder Council spoke quickly, excitedly. How long have they waited for the chance to clean up Richard’s messes? Now that they had it, they weren’t going to wait a moment, even to breathe.

“Alright,” I said, trying to take control of the situation. “Let’s make a list. Some things will take time, but I want to help those who need it. We’ll restore this pack to the way it was under my father’s rule. I promise.”

The Elders nodded, approving.

Jason’s POV

I showered and changed, then went looking for Laila. Infuriatingly, when I came too close to the offices where I sensed her presence, I was told to wait for her in a nearby sitting room. She was busy, I was told. She didn’t need the distractions while she worked.

I doubted such an order would come from Laila’s own mouth, but knew taking over a pack of this size wouldn’t be an easy task. She’d need time to get things in order.

I just wished that time didn’t have to be right now, when my adrenaline was still coursing through my veins and I needed my mate at my side to help me calm down.

Pacing the room, I was alone for only a moment before a familiar face shadowed the doorway. Larry, looking worse for wear but in good spirits walked into the sitting room.

“How about a drink?” he asked, and walked straight for the dry bar in the room.
