Chapter 397
Soon, Ava cried herself to steep and I gently laid her back on the bed. My chest ached like my heart was missing, but I knew I had to leave her.
I pulled the covers up to her chin, making sure she was warm and safe, then I stepped back.
I looked back at her twice on the way to the door. And then, a third time as J stood with the door open.
With regret, I finally stepped through it.
In the hallway, I gently closed the door again, careful to not let it make a sound and wake Ava.
William was there, arms crossed, watching me.
Through a small, narrow window on the door, I watched my daughter sleep.
“Will you be going to the Lycan pack?” I asked, the question meant for William, though spoken to the window.
“I will see Ava safely there,” William said. “I will visit often, but I don’t know if I’ll stay.”
I nodded, oddly comforted by the knowledge that he would be there to protect Ava, at least for a time.
“Are you really walking away from Laila again?” William asked. “And Ava too?”
“Don’t ask me that like it’s so easy,” I said. “How could I want to leave? But Laila is safe now, the leader of her own pack. I am still the Alpha of mine, and I have to get back to it. I have responsibilities -”
“Your responsibility is to your mate and your child.”
“It’s not that easy.”
“It is,” William said, unforgiving. “You placed your responsibility before Laila in the past, and regretted it. That was bad enough. But you have a daughter this time. How can you walk away from that?”
“What do you know?” I snapped, finally facing him. The words came out harshly, my anger spiking, but this fury wasn’t really meant for William, who had only been asking valid questions. The only person I was truly angry at was myself. “You have no idea what it’s like to be Alpha of a pack. I can’t just turn my back on my people. Not even if I want to. Not even for love.”
