Chapter 396
Jason’s POV
At the start of visiting the Lycan pack, I would have fought anyone who told me that I’be leaving without Laila. But now that she was safe, that she was the leader of the pack, I wasn’t needed anymore. She was safe. In time, she’d be happy.
I had to return to my pack.
Knowing that it wouldn’t be long before Ava was called to other’s side in the Lycan pack, I drove to the hospital where she was, to see her before she disappeared behind the Lycan pack lines. I didn’t know if, when she was officially a Lycan, if I would be able to see her again.
When I walked through the hallway, William was guarding her door. He turned and saw me, but his expression didn’t change.
“I’d heard you left,” he said.
“Can I see my daughter?”
William stepped to the side.
I walked forward but paused before going through the door. “Are you going to tell Laila I’m here?”
“After you’ve gone,” William said.
Nodding, I walked in the door.
Ava was awake, sitting upright in bed. She was drawing with her crayons, but stopped when I walked closer. She looked up, saw me, and gasped.
“Daddy!”
Casting aside her papers and her crayons, she bounded from her bed and jumped toward me.
Fear struck through me, not wanting her to get hurt. Until she was given the cure, she was still fragile and weak. Yet, hugging my daughter at last, I found that I couldn’t find the words to scold her. I didn’t have to, as she started to go slack in my arms, already exhausted.
Picking her up, I carried her back to the bed and tucked her under the covers.
She kept her eyes on me, though, with slight awe in them, like she couldn’t really believe I was here.
“You’re back,” she said.
