“Forgive me, Alpha, but you are being far too obvious,” he said. “Your reasons for disliking William’s proposal to not make sense from a professional standpoint. They scream of a private vendetta.”
His words came like a slap to the face, waking me up from the craze I had been under and finally allowing me to see the potential consequences of my actions.
He was right of course. I had no reason to treat William as maliciously as I had. He’d always worked well with me in the past, and all of his work today was well–researched and presented.
I had no idea what had come over me.
I ran a hand across my face, trying to recover my calm.
“It won’t happen again,” I said, and hoped I wasn’t lying.
What I needed was truth, once and for all. If I knew for certainty that Vanessa wasn’t Laila, then I could let this go and not potentially ruin my work with this obsessing.
“Please, Marcus,” I said. “Find Laila’s DNA sample as soon as possible. I need those DNA test results, and I need them fast.”
“Yes, Alpha,” Marcus said. “We have successfully obtained multiple DNA samples from Vanessa – from the celebration banquet, this meeting, and her office. Presently, the staff at the pack house are combing through Laila’s old belongings. I’m sure they will find something there. We should have results soon.”
“As quickly as possible,” I urged. “I need answers.”
I felt like I was losing my mind. I was definitely being unprofessional.
Only the truth would help guide me, and I could be okay again.
Laila’s POV
That meeting had been absolutely disastrous, and I still couldn’t really figure out why. Jason had always been mostly reasonable in our negotiations before, but this time he was acting like a petulant child. All of his animosity had been directed right at
William.
I was always expecting some pushback, so I had prepared to defend William’s company. But I didn’t think I would have to do so against Jason, who had worked with William in the past. Shouldn’t he have known better?
The only thing I could think that could cause Jason to act like that was if he was annoyed by my closeness to William.
But he shouldn’t.
Even if he suspected that I was Laila, he shouldn’t care what I did with my life. He had east me out and rejected me.
Or was this some kind of possessiveness?
No, I had to be imagining things. I wasn’t so narcissistic to believe that I could be responsible for his foul mood. More likely Brittany had done something that had upset him, and he was taking it out on the rest of us.
For now, I didn’t even want to think about this. What was done was done, and I wanted to get to Ava.
She was back in the hospital again, brought back after consistently suffering a shortness of breath.
There’d been some discussion among the doctors about a surgery that might help her, but as of now, nothing was decisive. The healers weren’t sure if it would help her.
William, however, was holding onto the steering wheel of the car like he was choking it. He drove us safely toward the hospital, obeying the traffic laws, but he held himself tightly and tensely, like a coiled up snake.
