Chapter 63
Laila’s POV
I shook my head in the end though
“I don’t know why he was acting so hostile, but I can’t imagine it had anything to do with me.”
“I wouldn’t be so sure,” he said. “And I wouldn’t be so dismissive of him. It was only after telling everyone about our engagement that he started acting so possessive –”
“He was in a bad mood – ”
“It was because of my connection to you,” William said with absolute certainty. “Jason is not someone to take lightly. He’s a powerful Alpha, and that power makes him exceptionally dangerous. As soon as your contract allows for it, you need to end any and all collaboration with him.”
“I can’t just end things,” I said. “This is a multi–million dollar contract that my company needs.” I needed it too, to show everyone at work that I knew what I was doing. For too long, I’ve felt like I was surviving at this job on the real Vanessa’s contracts alone. This was my first real chance to prove that I had my own talent for this work. “This contract could lead to many more opportunities.”
“It’s not worth it,” William said. “Jason is trouble, and he will make trouble for you. And what if he uncovers your secrets?”
“I can handle Jason,” I said.
William stopped the car at a red light and glanced over at me. I could tell from that glance alone that he doubted me and my ability to stand up to my ex–mate.
“I’ve hidden from him successfully all this time,” I said.”
“You weren’t sitting across from him at meeting room tables back then,” he said. “Now you are. He’s looking right at you. He’s talking to you. It’s only a matter of time at this rate, if he hasn’t already pieced everything together.”
“I won’t let him learn the truth,” I said with fervor. “Leave Jason to me. Just try to stay out of his way when he’s in moods like that. This is an important contract for your business too.”
He fell silent a minute. The light changed green and he released the brake. We continued on our way.
Just before we reached the hospital, he spoke once more. “You didn’t ask me why I announced our engagement.”
I hadn’t, because I didn’t think it was that big of a deal. William had played at being my fiancé for a long time, so it made sense for him to continue that act, especially around Jason who had shown some suspicion of me.
“You are a good friend,” I told him. “I can’t thank you enough for keeping up the fiancé act.”
“Yeah,” William said and let the word hang for a long moment. “That might not be the only reason.”
“What do you mean?” I asked him.
“You’ll understand soon enough,” he said and left it at that. We pulled in front of the hospital, and it was time to get out of the car. The conversation stayed with me, though, even after I exited and started walking.
What did he mean I would understand?
What was there to this that I didn’t already know?
Brittany’s POV
When the mail was brought into the pack house, I saw a letter for me among the stack, with the return address of the hospital. Immediately, I snatched it and then hurried off to a quiet corner of one of the sitting rooms.

Maybe I should have been ittore careful, more selective of where I was going to read this, but I was too anxious to know what was inside.
This had to be the results of the DNA test I had done on Ava’s hair, to determine if she was truly related by blood to Jason.
I tore at the envelope, then yanked the letter from inside. I opened it with enough force to crinkle the edges. Then I read at the quickest pace of my life.
I skimmed down to the results.
Not a match.
Relief flooded through me. I read it again. And then again.
The report was clear as could be. Ava and Jason were not related.
I’d held some worry that Jason might reject me because of the heir issue, but that was irrelevant now. Since Ava wasn’t his, I shouldn’t have to worry about that.
With the weight of this worry lifting off of my shoulders, I laughed a little as I turned toward the door.
I froze when I saw Jason standing there, watching me.
“Marcus said he saw you with a
a letter,” Jason said. “Something you were being secretive about.” He stepped closer, his eyes dropping to the envelope still in my hands. He must have seen the hospital’s address. “What is this about?”
I thought briefly of lying. It was like a reflex to me. But then, I realized… no. This letter was something I wanted him to see. If he knew the truth, he might stop his obsession with Vanessa and Laila and return to me.
I passed over the letter.
He turned it toward him and started to read.
Jason’s POV
“What is this?” I asked, though I could read it clearly enough for myself. Even so, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I needed Brittany to explain.
