The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 79

Laila’s POV

Sheila looked very serious as she told William I was cheating. William stared at her for a moment afterwards, and then started to

laugh.

So what if that’s true? I wouldn’t care,William said. She’s allowed to do whatever she wants.

Sheila’s smug expression immediately fell, and as satisfying as that was, she still posed an obnoxious threat that was better just left alone, particularly with William here. William was on my side, but that didn’t mean I wanted him to have to defend me.

Fortunately, William already had his guard up with Sheila.

We have to go now,William said. He gestured for me to move forward, and when I reached his side, he placed his hand on my shoulder and guided me forward.

WaitSheila said, somewhat weakly, like she was stunned. She recovered a moment later and said louder, more angrily. Hey, wait a minute!

Neither William nor I listened to her, as William escorted me out the front door. I worried Sheila might try to follow us but maybe because William had been so blunt, she didn’t.

When we were well into the parking lot, William kept his arm around me. It didn’t seem necessary anymore, but I didn’t know how to say that to him exactly, especially after he had just taken my side with Sheila.

I’ll drive you so we get there together,William said.

Alright,I said. Not only did I want to get to Ava as quickly as possible, but I wanted a moment with William to explain what was going on with Sheila.

William had proposed, his feelings clear, and knowing that, I felt like I owed him an explanation. Nothing was going on with Jason and me. I didn’t know how I felt about William, either, but I felt the need to make that clear.

But first, I needed to put as much distance between Sheila and William and myself as much as possible. Even though she had stayed behind for now, I still halfexpected her to come running after us when she finally thought of a good enough threat or comeback.

Only when we were in the car and driving away did I feel safe enough to allow myself to drop my guard a little. William and i still had a lot to talk about, but at least Sheila wouldn’t be jumping out from anywhere here and now to try to make my life even more complicated.

I’m sorry about that,I said.

You don’t have to apologize,William said. I’m guessing that was Sheila? You’ve been talking about her. When she was ready to throw you under the bus, I put two and two together.1

It was nice of him to have been paying attention when I vented. I hadn’t really expected him to listen. I also felt a bit bad, realizing I must have been complaining to him about work more than I thought I had. I needed to correct this. William didn’t need to be burdened with my work problems, and I didn’t want to depend on anyone for support, not even him.

I had already relied on him far too much.

At least, allow me to explain,I said. I should tell him that Jason was here tonight and how he helped me Nothing was going on with Jason and me, and I was determined that nothing ever would.

but that was it.

Not necessary,he said, surprising me.

I turned to look at him as he drove. Though his eyes were on the road, his face was soft and easy, without even a hint of worry or suspicion. The man was the picture of calm.

At ared light, after stopping the car, tre turned his head and met my eyes. He smiled a little.

I trust you,he said. Itrost everything about you.

Guilt immediately rose up within me.

William was a good man. Maybe too good for me.

Thank you,I said, and looked away, embarrassed. My mind slipped back to Jason, remembering how he defended me, and how he checked on me after I left the altercation with Shella.

Thinking of Jason while I was in the car with William only made me feel worse.

At the hospital, Ava was delighted to see William arrive with me. Papa! You are here!

You didn’t think I’d miss this, did you, kiddo?William asked.

Seeing Ava’s excitement, I didn’t have the heart to ask William to leave.

With William there to help distract Ava and keep her comfortable, the long treatment went by quickly, with William making Ava laugh. Sitting there, I couldn’t help but watch the two of them, warmed by their playful banter and how it made Ava so cheerful, even as tubes and machines were attached to her arms.

The treatment ended without any tears and soon Ava was back in her room, drifting off to sleep almost against her will. She was trying so hard to stay awake, to keep talking to William and me. After she was asleep, William and I stepped out into the hallway.

I hate to leave, but I should get going,William said.

Yes,I said. Thank you so much for today. Ava loved having you here.

William softly smiled. And you? Did you like having me here too?

For Ava’s sake, Yes,I said.

His smile grew wider. Could I have a kiss goodbye?he asked me.

I turned and offered my cheek. He didn’t miss a beat, leaning in and kissing me there.

I forced myself to stand still, accepting the kiss. Inside, my feelings were at war. I had no idea how I truly felt, but I hid it all, not allowing William to know about the battles being waged within my heart.

Goodnight,he said as he leaned back.

Goodnight,I replied gently, then watched him walk away.
