Chapter 80

Laila’s POV

As I’d made many contacts during the local business conference, I decided to invite them to the office that morning to visit my company and discuss potential future collaborations. I’d also hoped that showing off these new contacts would help build some confidence in me among both my employees and the board.

To my relief, most of the local entrepreneurs agreed. Jason was among them.

The entrepreneurs were to arrive at the office first thing in the morning and we would meet in one of the larger meeting rooms near the end of the hallway.

I arrived around the same time those I was meeting with did, though I didn’t stop to speak with them as they all huddled near the coffee pot. Instead, I hurried ahead alone, hoping to prepare for the meeting before they sat down in the meeting room. I rushed to my office to put down my things and get organized. I could have only peen in there for ten or so minutes.

Grabbing my supplies and files for the meeting, I went down the hallway toward the meeting room. Through the windows, I could see that Jason and the other entrepreneurs weren’t the only ones in the room.

Sheila was there as well, talking to one of them. She looked up at the same time I looked at her, and our eyes locked through the window.

Quickly, she excused herself and came out to meet me, stopping me in the hallway before I could enter the room and confront her in front of everyone, which had been my immediate intention.

This isn’t your meeting, Sheila,I told her.

She huffed at me. It would be better if it was.

That was a matter of opinion, and I didn’t agree with it. Arguing with her about it, however, was futile. And frankly, I didn’t have time for it.

I’m only here to help, Vanessa. Gods know you need it.

You didn’t arrange this. I did,I said. You have no business interfering. Just stay out of it and we won’t have any trouble.

She smirked. Maybe I want trouble.

She reached into her pocket and before I really understood what was happening, she withdrew a small bottle, popped the top, and spilled the clear liquid contents all over me.

The liquid was cold and I flinched. Then, I caught the smell.

She just threw vodka on me.

Why?

I gave her an incredulous look, and she grinned wider.

Raising her voice, she announced loud enough for people in the office and in the meeting room to hear, “Vanessa! You can’t ge to this meeting drunk!

I froze, realizing now that she had set the perfect scene.

I was covered in vodka, smelling like it, looking stunned as Jason and some of his associates stepped out of the office to witness

the scene.

To witness my demise.

Sheila gave me one last vicious smirk before shifting her entire expression to one of taux concern as she turned around to face
