That girl had wanted a family so badly. Fiona was the sister I grew up with before Lydia came and I knew how much she loved each of her family. As a kid, she won’t stop following us everywhere, wanting to be with me especially.
So why had I been so cold–why had I pushed her away and thrown such cruel words at her?
“Damon, what’s wrong? You okay?”
Lydia’s voice pulled me back. I hadn’t even realized I was still staring at Fiona’s back as she walked away, her posture straight, her steps confident—nothing like the girl I remembered.
Lydia followed my gaze, and I felt her fingers tug gently at my sleeve. Her voice softened as she drew closer.
I shook my head and brushed a hand over her hair, forcing a weak smile.
“It’s nothing…”
“Damon,” Lydia said quietly, her voice trembling. “I know you’re thinking about Fiona. She’s your real sister–your blood. It’s not too late. Go after her. If you talk to her, I’m sure she’ll listen.”
Her eyes shimmered with tears as she looked down, clutching my arm tightly.
I felt something twist in my chest, but remembered how Lydia had became my pride, wiping the shame Fiona brought. She was like the light to the darkness Fiona brought to our family.
“There’s no going back,” I said softly. “Don’t be silly. It is better this way. The Jensons already have you, Lydia. There’s no room for Fiona anymore.”
I lowered my eyes and held Lydia’s hand, my voice quieter than I meant it to be. “Maybe… that’s for the best that we have you and not her. That’s why all this happened.”
The guilt still sat heavily in my chest because I knew the truth without doubt that Fiona was my real sister–the one the DNA test made undeniable.
But even if Fiona came back, I knew I couldn’t love her more than I loved Lydia.
Lydia was the sister I had grown to love. The one I had protected, spoiled, and cherished almost my whole life. And it wasn’t just me.
Russell, my father felt the same. Lisa did too.

To the Jensons, Fiona was… extra. A burden who didn’t fit in.
That was the ugly truth I didn’t want to face.
She could never compare to Lydia. And if she came back into the family, she would only suffer because no matter what, she would always come after Lydia. So maybe leaving things as they were was kinder.
Easier for all of us.
“Damon…”
Lydia bit her lip and suddenly threw herself into my arms. Her shoulders shook as tears welled in her eyes.
“I really hate myself. If I hadn’t been with the Jensons, none of this would have happened. I should be the one to go. I’m the one who doesn’t belong. Because of me, Fiona-”
I pressed my fingers gently to her lips, cutting her off.
“That’s enough, Lydia. Stop.” My voice softened. “You’re too kind. Too soft. You always take everything onto yourself.”
I held her close.
“This isn’t on you. It’s on us. We just… can’t face our own hearts but don’t worry, we will soon all forget there was anyone like her.”
She let out a smile and nodded. “I trust you. Fiona chose her path.”
I pecked her cheeks and as I raised my head, I saw Fiona entering the building.
She didn’t look back and had no idea what Lydia and I were saying behind her–and somehow, that made me feel worse for reason I don’t know.
I watched her walk toward the college entrance without hesitation and there was no trace of sadness on her face. No anger either.
Just distance. Cold, clean distance.
Maybe she had already felt the disappointment, sadness, and pain so many times that she had gone numb.
My mind flashed back to Mom’s words to her at Sky Dining last night. Alfie the manager had sent the cctv record to me, pleading that I should tell Lisa to stop publicly attacking Fiona.

After listening to her hurtful words, I knew If I were Fiona, I wouldn’t come back to the family either. Afterall, she had made wealth. The only confusion was why the silver vein chose her.
For someone who had a late shift, weak and cutting ties with her Beta family, she was not qualified for that kind of organization.
I guess nothing is impossible afterall.
At the entrance, I saw her friend, Raina waiting eagerly. The moment she spotted Fiona, she waved and ran forward, wrapping her in a tight hug.
I couldn’t hear their words from where I stood, but Fiona’s steps slowed and she was suddenly excited, a huge smile gracing her face. And for some reason, that hurt more than if she’d looked broken.
They walked into the building together, side by side and I stood there long after they disappeared inside.
Watching and realizing something far too late-
Fiona had already found a place where she belonged.
And it wasn’t with us anymore.
