Chapter 53 No Way Back

Quinn fumbled for her phone beside the bed. Forcing her eyes open, she struggled to sit up.

“Mom,” she said after answering, her voice hoarse.

‘If you still think of me as your mother, go down to the police station right now and withdraw the report,” Elaine snapped, anger sharp in her voice. “How long are you planning to keep this ridiculous stunt going?”

If he agrees to the divorce, I won’t pursue the case,” Quinn said. There was no hesitation in her tone. “There are no other terms.”

You’re his wife. You have obligations in a marriage. Do I really need to explain that to you?” Elaine said sharply. “Men lose their heads sometimes. That happens. It’s normal. Why are you making such a huge scene and dragging it all the way to the police station? Do you have any idea how humiliating this is?”

‘Please don’t say anything else,” Quinn replied quietly. “No matter what you say, I’m not changing my decision.”

You are just…” Elaine was so furious she seemed unable to find the right word. “If I’d known raising you would turn out like this, I should never have taken you in!”

Victor took the phone from her.

If you insist on getting divorced,” he said coldly, “then don’t blame us for cutting ties with you.”

A wave of irritation rose in Quinn’s chest, mixed with a deep, bone–deep exhaustion.

She was so tired.

Victor’s voice was full of disgust. “If you want sympathy, maybe you should take a good look at what you’ve done first. Your mother and I are practically being driven to an early grave, and you expect us to feel sorry for you?”

Quinn felt something in her chest suddenly sink.

“You stop right there!” Victor barked. “If you dare step inside today, just wait and see what I do to you!”

Veronica frowned and stepped in front of Quinn protectively.

“What matters more, her life and safety, or your reputation?” she shot back. “You’re going way too far.”

“This is our family’s business!” Elaine snapped angrily. “Who asked you to butt in? Maybe she turned out like this because she’s been hanging around people like you!”

Quinn tugged gently on Veronica’s sleeve and shook her head.

I’m fine. Don’t argue with them.”

Seeing the exhaustion on her face, Veronica felt a sharp stab of sympathy.

“Alright,” she said softly. “Let’s go inside.”

As the head of the household, Victor had never had his authority challenged like this before.

When anger reached its peak, it strangely settled into a cold calm.
