Chloe turned to her vanity and started organizing her things when Ian knocked and came in.

His eyes landed on the giant tote bags at the foot of the bed. Ian walked over to Chloe and asked, “Need a hand?”

Chloe glanced at the bags at the foot of the bed, then quietly averted her gaze.

They were filled with all the gifts Ian had given her over the years. She still hadn’t figured out where to put them.

She tossed the wet wipe aside and asked tentatively, “Your birthday’s coming up in a few days. How do you want to celebrate?”

Ian studied Chloe’s expression, unable to hide the frown on his face.

He said, “Same as always. With you.”

Chloe paused what she was doing.

She tilted her head up to meet Ian’s gaze.

She said, “Ian, I made myself clear last night.”

“No matter what my grandpa or dad said or did, that doesn’t speak for me!

“After all these years as childhood friends, I’ll always be your friend, just like I’ve always been!” Ian cut her off before she could finish, his face cold as he corrected her.

They locked eyes, standing close together.

Chloe gave a small, conceding nod. “Even if we’ve been childhood friends forever, we’re both grown up now. We’re not married, not dating, and we’re definitely not siblings. If we stick too close, people will get the wrong idea.”

lan’s gaze was intense, locked onto Chloe.

He spoke again, his voice unconsciously gentle. “I don’t care if I could be your husband or your boyfriend. I’m in, as long as you say yes.”

Chloe glared at him hard. “No way!”

Ian couldn’t stop himself; he reached out and grabbed Chloe’s hand.

He wanted nothing more than to get closer, to just hold her tight

He forced himself to hold back, but his voice came out low and tempting. “Chloe, can we go somewhere and really talk?”

Chloe sensed what lan was about to do and subtly shifted to the side, slipping out of his reach.

Chloe stared at lan, and suddenly, an idea struck her.

‘I’ve got it!’ Chloe realized. She’d just figured out the perfect way to bring Andrea and her son back home.

Chloe forced herself to stay calm, her heart pounding. She turned to lan and said, “We just moved in yesterday and haven’t had a chance to warm up the place yet.

“Why don’t you come with me to the seafood market? We can talk on the way.”

Ian agreed right away.

Chloe led lan out the door. “Jill, Ian and I are heading to the seafood market to pick up some seafood and groceries. We’ll be back soon.

After Chloe and Ian left, the three people left in the living room just stared at each other, totally baffled.

Carl turned to his parents. “Dad, Mom, didn’t Chloe say she was done with lan yesterday?”

Jill looked at Frank. “Did those two make up or something?”

Frank was just as lost. “Let’s wait until Ian leaves tonight and then ask Chloe.”

Forty minutes later, they arrived at the biggest seafood market downtown.

As soon as Chloe and Ian walked in, heads turned all around; the vendors couldn’t help but stare.

Chloe was just too gorgeous; her sweet smile could melt anyone heart.

And lan was ridiculously handsome, with a commanding presence that made him impossible to ignore.

Together, they were total eye candy.

Chloe paid no attention to all the jealous stares around her. She put up with the strong fishy smell and dragged lan around the market, hunting for seafood.

Ian splashed water on his shiny leather shoes as he stepped into puddle. He reached for a tissue, ready to wipe them off, but then caught sight of Chloe bargaining with the vendor.

He just slipped the tissue back into his pocket, saying nothing.

Chloe pointed to the other side. “Let’s check out over there. Maybe it’s cheaper.”

Ian nodded.

Honestly, Ian felt like he’d won the lottery just because Chloe asked him to come along. He wouldn’t dare complain about anything.
