Chapter 100

Third Person’s POV

Archer said nothing more.

He pushed open the car door and stepped out. The night wind swept across his tall frame, dispersing the cold, oppressive Alpha aura radiating from him.

He walked around to the other side and lifted Trista from Melanie’s arms.

The moment the little girl settled against his chest, she began kicking her legs excitedly, like a young cub that had just stumbled into a pack, her tail wagging so hard it seemed it might snap.

Daddy-

she called in her highpitched voice.

Archer’s hands supported her back with steady ease, his movements practiced and instinctive.

As he approached Melanie, her breath caught almost imperceptibly.

That scent returned.

The blend of sweet orange and nightblooming jasmineCamille’s scent

It hadn’t been there when he sat beside her earlier.

Frost whimpered softly in the depths of her consciousness, its tail pressed low.

She didn’t need to think about what it meant.

He had gone to the Cummings family after leaving them.

An Alpha patrols his territory.

He also patrols his allies.

Archer stopped in front of her, his gaze resting on her face, faintly chilled by the night wind. His eyes remained steady and

restrained, and he did not linger.

The night wind is cold. Go back inside.

His tone was calm, like a routine command.

Melanie took a step back.

It was her body’s instinctive adjustment of distance.

Understood.

Her voice was as light as a fallen leaf brushing the ground.

Trista immediately poked her little head out and waved.

Bye, Mommy!

Melanie nodded.

Mm.

Archer carried Trista back to the car.

The moment the door closed, Melanie had already turned away.

She didn’t wait for the car to leave.

Her high heels clickedcrisp and solitaryagainst the stone pavement outside the hotel.

The night stretched her shadow long behind her.

Inside the car, Archer watched her receding figure through the window. In the dim light, his irises appeared unusually dark.

Several seconds passed before he looked away.

Drive.

The chauffeur responded immediately.

The black sedan merged smoothly into the night traffic, like a predator slipping silently into the city’s dark river.

As Melanie neared her parking space, she suddenly sensed another presence.

Not unfamiliar.

But it carried a deliberately restrained, gentle Alpha pressure.

Melanie.

Her steps halted, and she turned instinctively.

Dwight stepped away from his car.

Tonight, he kept his dominance tightly contained, leaving only faint traces of cedar and tobacco a presence intentionally

subdued.

Melanie had assumed it was coincidence. The Willis family didn’t book the whole hotel tonight. Maybe Dwight just happened to come here to deal with some matters.

She gave him a polite nod, then unlocked her car door, preparing to leave.

Dwight didn’t move.

Only when Melanie pulled the door open did she notice he was still standing there, his gaze fixed on her like a wolf maintaining a cautious distance while remaining perpetually alert.

She turned to face him.

His expression was cool and distant.

Is there something you need?

Dwight’s Adam’s apple bobbed slightly.

He had intended to bring up tonight’s banquet.

But the words caught in his throat, and he swallowed them back.

It’s about Myra,he said. She has a gift she wants to give you. In a couple of dayswould you be free for dinner?

Myra.

The girl whose spirit and wolf soul had nearly shattered in the accident.

She had once told Melanie-

that she saw her mother’s shadow in her.

Melanie’s mother had long since passed away.

And Melanie understood the weight of that attachment.

Frost gently wagged its tail deep within her consciousness, softening her mood for a moment.

She actually liked Myra quite a bit.

If it were only about the child, she wouldn’t refuse.

But if Dwight was the connection-

She fell silent.

Just then, Dwight added abruptly,

Your uncle’s projectI can help.

Melanie paused, startled.

He offered no explanation, only continued calmly.

“You can think it over. Call me anytime after you decide.

Melanie didn’t respond immediately.

Trust in the wolf world was never built with a single sentence.

Dwight was closely allied with Camille.

He also maintained an alliance with Archer.

Even if his help was sincere now-

If she clashed with Camille in the future, who could guarantee he wouldn’t turn business cooperation into a bargaining chip, just as Archer might?

Seeming to sense her hesitation, Dwight sighed.

I can promise not to involve personal relationships in your uncle’s business affairs.

Melanie looked at him.

Are you sure?

I’m sure.

She knew the predicament her uncle’s company was facing.

She also understood that within the wolf clan’s business alliances, resources equated to territorial security.

She hesitated for a few seconds.

Alright.

Dwight nodded.

Contact me when you have time. I’ll make the arrangements.

Alright.

The night wind swirled again, lifting strands of Melanie’s dark hair.

Dwight watched as one lock brushed across her cheek, his voice softening slightly.

The night air is cold. Go inside.

Melanie froze for a moment.

The exact same words.

Archer had said them only minutes earlier.

She nodded faintly, said nothing more, and got into her car, closing the door.

Dwight remained standing where he was.

As the car passed him, Melanie rolled down the window, gave him a brief nod, then pressed the accelerator and drove away.

Dwight watched until the car disappeared around the corner.

Only then did he turn and get into his own car.

When Melanie returned to the Willis family villa, the hall lights were still on.

Monica and Chad had not yet retired.

Lucien and Cassian had already gone to their rooms.

Clearly, they had been waiting for her.

You’re back?Monica asked.

Mhm.

Melanie set down her bag and sat beside her.

Monica took her hand.

It was the gentle, enveloping touch only an elder wolf could give.

Have you made your decision yet?

Melanie didn’t dodge the question.

Yes. We’re preparing to dissolve the bond.

1

Monica visibly relaxed.

Goodgood. That’s good.

But soon, her brow furrowed again.

Trista relies on him now. Andhe has been good to the child these past two years. He might not grant you custody.

Melanie lowered her gaze.

She had never intended to fight for it.

But she didn’t say that aloud.

I’ll talk to him,she said simply.

It’s getting late. Everyone should get some rest now.
