The reluctance in Trista’s voice was unmistakable.
She didn’t want to go. Camille immediately came to mind.
If Mom and Camille sat at the same table, it would only turn sour. Tension would thicken the air, Camille would be singled out, and everyone would feel awkward.
Melanie studied her daughter and understood almost instantly.
As a young wolf, Trista couldn’t hide such things–especially not from Melanie. Her preference for a certain scent betrayed itself in the rhythm of her breathing.
Melanie didn’t call her out.
“Mom’s already eating,” she said without hesitation. “You go ahead.”
Trista visibly relaxed, then seemed to realize her relief might be improper. She glanced up at Melanie quickly.
“Aren’t… you coming down?”
“No.”
It wasn’t stubbornness.
It was simply unnecessary.
Trista whispered for confirmation, “Then… should I just tell Dad?”
Melanie nodded. “Yes. Go ahead.”
Trista started to leave, took two steps, then paused awkwardly, turning back. “Mom, won’t you get bored here alone?”
Melanie reached up, brushing the hair from her forehead, sending no pheromones of comfort or restraint.
“No,” she said. “Mom needs quiet.”
The door clicked shut behind Trista.
Silence returned to the room.
Melanie went back to the table and finished the meal meant solely for her. Deep in her chest, she felt the Bond that had once tied her to the Alpha unraveling, slowly disintegrating.
Outside, the evening breeze slid through the cracks in the towering windows, carrying the crisp, cool scent of the forest.
“If you ask me, there was no need to call her down specifically,” Edric said with a light smile, as it pointing out an obvious truth
“She’s still the Luna of the pack, and it’s proper procedure,” Archer replied coldly
The remark made Camille pause. Her lips tightened as she looked at him. Dwight and Edric froze as well.
arul Moira
Soon, Edric laughed again “True,” he said. “Moira specifically told me to keep an eye on you Even though we’re at a hot spring resort, there’s no guarantee Moira won’t hear about it from someone else. If we all go out to eat and don’t invite finds out later, that’s going to be a hard thing to explain”
The logic was sound. Carnille relaxed. She realized she’d been overthinking it
At that moment, Trista approached Alpha Archer cautiously “Dad,” she whispered. “I’m already eaten She won’t be coming

down.”
“Good. Someone knows when to back off,” Edric remarked with a raised eyebrow.
Dwight kept his gaze low, silent. He could sense Melanie’s emotional detachment, yet he dared not act rashly. As Archer’s friend, restraint was mandatory.
Meanwhile, Camille smiled at the table, a casual smile tinged with triumphant contempt. She knew, deep down–Melanie would not come down.
“She knows her place,” Camille thought. “No one downstairs wants her. Even if she came down, she’d only be a laughingstock.
Better to stay upstairs, like a hiding ostrich.”
Archer nodded calmly. “Very well. I understand.” Then he gestured to the others. “Don’t wait for her. Let’s begin.”
Camille sat elegantly beside Archer, her poise effortless, as if the entire hall belonged to her. Melanie’s absence only strengthened her confidence, reinforcing her sense of solid standing in this community.
Upstairs, Melanie had already finished her meal. Candlelight flickered across her desk as she remained absorbed in her research.
Elmer returned home shortly after. Reviewing the program and data Melanie had sent, he slammed his fist on the table in
excitement.
“Holy shit! Genius! Melanie, you’re a genius at this! I knew you could do it!”
“Seven years!” he groaned, burying his face in his hands. “Seven whole years! If you hadn’t gone to form that bond, our company would already be famous across the North!”
Melanie winced at his shouting and moved her phone slightly away. Elmer cleared his throat, composed himself, and got down
to business.
“To make a real impact, it can’t just be you and me,” he said, immediately contacting colleagues like Ansley. Though the other members lagged behind in AI expertise, Elmer’s explanation sparked their interest, and they eagerly volunteered to work
overtime.
“It’ll take me about two hours to get back to the office,” Melanie said. “When inspiration strikes, you can’t stop. Once it’s gone, it’s gone forever.”
They decided to hold a remote discussion via the computer first. Melanie felt a long–forgotten sense of respect for the first time. Here, she wasn’t the overlooked Alpha Mate–she was a valued partner.
“Are you alone in the room? Where are Archer and the others?” Elmer asked during a pause.
“Not sure. Probably enjoying the meal.”
“Just the Alpha and Trista?”
“Camille and Edric are here too.”
Elmer frowned. “They’re all here, yet they left you alone?”
Melanie shrugged “He had Trista call me downstairs for dinner. I refused ”
“Well, at least Archer has some conscience,” Elmer said.
Melanie didn’t agree. Archer simply didn’t want to be bothered by Moira Even if she had gone downstairs, the clan sides with Camille–there was no risk of Melanie being bullied Her absence simply preserved the last shred of her dignity.
