The Breaking Point of Mate: Giving Up on My Alpha novel Chapter 87

Chapter 87

Melanie’s POV

Gillian and I froze at the same time.

Two figures stood ahead, partially hidden by the beverage counter. They clearly hadn’t noticed us.

The other man chuckled.

Sounds like you’re quite taken with the sweet little thing standing next to Gillian. Why not go say hello?

Gillian’s eyebrows shot up. She was already poised to drag me away.

Evander shook his head.

No.

What? Lost interest already?

Alpha Evander paused, as if weighing his thoughts.

She’s beautiful.

But… too quiet. No bite to her.

Gillian’s fingers tightened abruptly.

The other man laughed outright.

And you said you weren’t interested in Camille? That icequeen type practically begs to be conquered.

He lowered his voice conspiratorially.

  1. 2.

Besides, everyone in the circle knowsever since she showed up, plenty of Alphas haven’t been able to get her out of their heads. Shame she belongs to Archer.

Gillian’s expression darkened completely as she started forward.

I gently caught her wrist.

It’s fine.

My voice remained calm.

My wolf Frost settled deep inside my mind, still and silent as ever.

They left quickly.

Gillian’s chest rose and fell with anger.

I used to think Alpha Evander had good judgment. Who knew even he could be dazzled by Camille?”

Before she could finish, a man with a careless, swaggering air approached us. His scent was chaotic and muddled, buried beneath a cloud of cheap cologne.

He looked at me with a greasy grin.

Gillian, this is-

Get lost.

Gillian’s voice cut like a blade.

The man’s face darkened, but he didn’t dare linger. He retreated quickly.

Gillian drained her drink in one swallow and muttered,

Why is every guy hitting on you tonight complete trash? Are all the decent Alphas too busy chasing someone like Camille?

I patted her back lightly.

Camille was exceptional.

That was undeniable.

But before I could say anything-

Gillian suddenly went still.

I followed her gaze.

Camille stood a short distance away, holding two glasses of water.

I hadn’t noticed when she arrived. But judging by the subtle curve of her lips-

She had almost certainly heard Evander’s earlier remarks.

She said nothing.

She simply cast me a cold glance.

The look felt like a faint brand pressed against my skin.

Then she turned and walked away.

A trace of sweet orange lingered in the air before slowly fading.

Gillian let out a low, sudden growl.

Damn it.

Her wolf nearly surged to the surface, that taillashing fury racing along her nerves and lodging in her throat.

Who does she think she is?Gillian’s voice dropped, rough with barely restrained rage. Nothing more than a thirdparty bloodline, surviving by clinging to an Alphawhat gives her the right to act like she’s won?

Her aura sharpened, blazing hot in the air.

Some kind of heartthrob?she sneered. Her pheromones smell like spoiled nectar. Even carrion birds would choke on something that sweet.

I didn’t answer.

Instead, I quietly pushed a cup of warm water toward her, the motion gentlelike calming a young wolt on the verge of snapping.

Heartthrob?I repeated evenly.

Gillian sucked in a sharp breath, still tangled in her anger.

Camille. Just like Evander’s friend said -half the spoiled, secondgeneration Alphas, drunk on power and pedigree, are

swarming around her like they’ve caught the scent of a heat cycle. She rolled her eyes. They even gave her a title- the Moon Kissed SheWolf.Supposedly she enchants everyone she meets.

Her voice trailed off.

Then it dropped even lower.

But those idiots are one thingeven Archer, and Alpha Evander too-

She stopped midsentence, clamping her mouth shut.

The air fell still.

Realizing she had crossed a line, she grimaced.

NoMelanie, that’s not what I meant. I just-

I shook my head.

It’s fine.

My voice was lightlike a night wind sweeping across a snowfield, leaving no trace behind.

Since childhood-

Marvin. Daphne. Others who once belonged to my pack, my blood, had drifted toward Camille one by one.

And later-

Archer’s Alpha presence had instinctively softened the very first moment he saw her.

Trista, shyly clutching Camille’s hand, declaring she wanted her to be the second mother.

Those memories were like silent silver nails, long ago hammered into my chest until everything inside had sealed shut.

I never truly howled over any of it.

If I had allowed myself to break-

Any one of those moments would have been enough to shatter me.

And yet, after all these years, I’m still standing.

The words of Evander and men like himdon’t even deserve to brush my fur.

Gillian fell quiet.

At last, she stepped forward and pulled me into a tight embrace.

Melanie

I curved my lips into a smile.

Soft. Gentle, Completely without warmth.

It’s getting late,I murmured. Let’s head back.

Gillian nodded.

Your grandmother’s birthday giftI’ll go with you to pick it out another day. We’ll find something worthy of her.

Alright,I said.

I took her hand, and we walked side by side out of the building.

Night had fully settled in.

The parking lot lights cast a cold white glow, like frost glazing over still water.

As soon as we stepped out of the elevator, two figures emerged from the opposite corridor.

Archer.

And Camille.

The patchouli scent surrounding Archer remained steady and restrained, like an ancient forest tree that would never fall.

Camille stood beside him, her sweet orange pheromones drifting softly through the airgentle, yet carrying a subtle, possessive edge.

The scent brushed precisely against the boundary of my senses.

Like a territorial mark.

Archer’s gaze flicked briefly toward me.

I pretended not to notice, opening the car door first and sliding into the driver’s seat.

Gillian let out a cold snortsharp, almost wolfish at the edgesbefore yanking open the passenger door and climbing in.

The door slammed shut.

The engine rumbled to life with a low growl.

The car pulled smoothly out of the parking bay.
